John Cena Returns as DC’s Peacemaker in Season 2 Trailer

James Gunn and John Cena tease what’s next for DC Studios’ most outrageous hero, Peacemaker.

The world’s most reluctant superhero is back. HBO Max has officially released the first trailer for season two of Peacemaker. It is the hit DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television series created by James Gunn and starring John Cena. The new season, comprising eight episodes, will premiere on Thursday, August 21, at 9 p.m. ET exclusively on HBO Max.

The season two trailer made its surprise debut during the Peacemaker panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Series creator James Gunn was joined on stage by John Cena. Also on stage were returning cast members Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Steve Agee. New to season 2 are newcomers Frank Grillo, Tim Meadows, and Sol Rodriguez, all set to make their mark in the new season.

Peacemaker Enters a New Reality

Season two finds Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, grappling with a reality far from the one he knows. The logline teases a strange new world where life appears to be everything he’s ever wanted. But underneath the surface lies a confrontation with the ghosts of his past—and a reckoning that could change his future forever.

James Gunn returns in full creative force, having written all eight episodes and stepping behind the camera to direct three, including the season premiere.

Returning Favorites and New Faces

John Cena reprises his role as the crass-yet-compelling Peacemaker. He is joined once again by Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s troubled father, Auggie Smith.

Joining the cast for Season Two is Frank Grillo, playing the mysterious Rick Flag Sr., along with David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and comedian Tim Meadows in undisclosed roles.

The Future of the DCU

Peacemaker remains one of the cornerstone series of the restructured DC Universe under Gunn’s direction. The character first appeared in The Suicide Squad (2021) before landing his own critically acclaimed spin-off series in 2022. Season one was praised for its mix of brutal action, absurd comedy, and surprising emotional depth, setting a high bar for this next chapter.

With the new season promising both a surreal twist and deeper character development, Peacemaker season two looks to push the boundaries of superhero storytelling once again.

Peacemaker season two premieres August 21 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
