World Premiere of Primate Kicks Off Fantastic Fest 2025 in Austin

Red Carpet premiere of Primate highlights Fantastic Fest 2025.

Fantastic Fest 2025 roared to life Thursday, September 18, at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar with the world premiere of Primate, the latest horror feature from director Johannes Roberts. The opening night screening drew a packed house, with stars Johnny Sequoyah and Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur walking the red carpet. Roberts, who co-wrote and directed the film, was joined by producer Walter Hamada and producer John Hodges. The premiere underscored Fantastic Fest’s reputation for unveiling bold and daring genre films.

A Primal Tale of Survival

Primate, presented by Paramount Pictures in association with Domain Entertainment and produced by 18Hz. The film follows a group of friends whose tropical getaway spirals into a nightmarish battle for survival. Their sun-soaked vacation becomes a harrowing story of horror as primal instincts take over.

The film features performances by Sequoyah, Kotsur, Jessica Alexander, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, and Tienne Simon.

A Strong Creative Team

The movie is directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) and co-written with frequent collaborator Ernest Riera. Roberts also serves as an executive producer alongside Vicki Dee Rock, Nathan Samdahl, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.

Producers include Walter Hamada, John Hodges, and Bradley Pilz. Their combined experience in genre filmmaking signals a film that embraces classic survival horror while pushing modern boundaries.

In Theaters This Winter

The Fantastic Fest premiere marks the beginning of the film’s road to release. Paramount Pictures will debut Primate exclusively in theaters on January 9, 2026, positioning the film as one of the first major horror releases of the year.
