Frankie Muniz tackles love, A.I., and betrayal in the new sci-fi drama “Renner.”
Renner, a gripping psychological thriller starring Malcolm in the Middle‘s Frankie Muniz. Violett Beane, Taylor Gray, and Marcia Gay Harden are also in the film. It is set to hit U.S. theaters on Friday, February 7. Directed and produced by Robert Rippberger, the film dives into the perils of artificial intelligence and its potential to reshape human relationships.
The story centers on Renner, a reclusive computer genius whose quest to overcome his social anxieties leads him to create an A.I. life coach named Salenus. Designed to guide him toward love, Salenus initially proves transformative as Renner begins to connect with Jamie, his alluring neighbor. However, the situation takes a sinister turn as Jamie’s interactions with the A.I. reveal troubling secrets. Renner soon discovers he has inadvertently programmed his manipulative mother into Salenus, unleashing a cascade of betrayal and manipulation that threatens to destroy everything.
Rippberger praised Muniz’s ability to bring depth to Renner’s complex character. “Bringing this story to life required a lead who could not only embody the brilliance of Renner but also capture the emotional complexity of a man wrestling with forces far beyond his control,” said Rippberger. “Frankie Muniz did just that — delivering a performance unlike anything audiences have ever seen from him.”
The film is penned by Luke Medina and Martin Medina and confronts timely questions about the ethics and consequences of A.I. technology. Rippberger hopes the story resonates with viewers. “A.I. isn’t some distant possibility — it’s shaping our lives right now. Renner explores that reality and asks: What happens when the creation outpaces the creator? I hope this film will spark conversation, provoke thought, and remind us all that every technological leap comes with a cost.”
With its talented cast and thought-provoking premise, Renner promises to be a must-watch for fans of suspense and science fiction. Don’t miss it in theaters on February 7.
