Revisiting Jennifer Garner’s Elektra On Its 20th Anniversary

How Elektra paved the way for female superheroes.

Released on January 14, 2005, Elektra marked an ambitious attempt to expand the Marvel superhero genre with a female lead. Directed by Rob Bowman, the film served as a spinoff to 2003’s Daredevil, with Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra Natchios, the deadly assassin with a tormented soul.

The plot follows Elektra as she is resurrected by the enigmatic “Order of the Hand” after her tragic death in Daredevil. Haunted by her past, she becomes a contract killer, but her life takes a turn when she is assigned to assassinate a father and daughter, Mark and Abby Miller, played by Goran Visnjic and Kirsten Prout. Elektra’s decision to protect them instead places her in direct conflict with the Hand, unleashing a thrilling series of battles infused with martial arts and supernatural elements.

The film has a solid supporting cast.

It featured Terence Stamp as Stick, Elektra’s blind mentor who teaches her the old-school combat techniques, and Will Yun Lee as Kirigi, a tough member of the Hand. Even with great source material and a talented cast, “Elektra” didn’t hit the mark with critics or audiences. While Garner’s take on the emotionally complex anti-heroine got some love, people often pointed out the film’s uneven pacing and lack of character development as major drawbacks.

At the box office, Elektra earned $56 million worldwide against a reported $43 million budget. It was financially modest. However, the growing success of other Marvel adaptations such as Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand overshadowed it. Nevertheless, the film carved out a niche following. Fans appreciated its darker tone. Garner’s commitment to the role was also recognized.

Fast forward to today, and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra is making headlines again with her exciting return in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Her comeback has sparked a lot of chatter about her character and what she means for the Marvel cinematic universe. Garner’s return isn’t just a fun throwback to those early 2000s superhero movies; it shows how strong the character is, even after all the ups and downs. Elektra still knows how to grab the audience’s attention!

On its 20th anniversary, Elektra stands as a reminder of the evolution of comic book films. It may not have reached the heights of its contemporaries. However, it paved the way for female-led superhero stories. It remains an intriguing chapter in Marvel’s history.
