Houston’s historic River Oaks Theatre has made a triumphant return after a two-year, multi-million-dollar restoration. Reopened on October 3, 2024, the beloved theater blends its original Art Deco charm with luxurious modern updates. They have set a new standard for cinematic and live entertainment in the city.

Located in the iconic River Oaks Shopping Center, the theater now offers more than just films.

It has become a versatile venue for live events, including concerts and comedy shows. Its grand reopening included an advance screening of Joker: Folie à Deux, a perfect start to a diverse lineup of upcoming events, which also features a 50th-anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and a local shadowcast performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Culinary Khancepts led the restoration effort, preserving the theater’s iconic elements such as the burgundy and gold color scheme, the terrazzo flooring, and the marquee, while introducing opulent touches like bold geometric patterns and modern conveniences. “This project has been a labor of love,” said Omar Khan, owner of Culinary Khancepts. “We’ve honored the theater’s legacy while enhancing the guest experience with modern technology and amenities.”

The 237-seat main auditorium is now equipped with a state-of-the-art Barco laser projector, a custom Danley sound system, and live theatrical lighting. Two additional auditoriums seat 50 guests each. A newly added Private Theatre Lounge also offers a more intimate setting for private events. In addition to films and live events, the theater now offers a full-service dining experience with seat-side service. Guests can enjoy craft cocktails, like “That Rug Really Tied the Room Together” inspired by The Big Lebowski, and indulge in creative menu options, including Veal and Pork Fried Meatballs and the Luv Ya Blu Burger.
