Rob Kazinsky and Sven Ruygrok share their Star Trek: Section 31 experience.

The Star Trek franchise expands its legacy with Star Trek: Section 31, streaming exclusively on Paramount+ this Friday, January 24. Michelle Yeoh reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, leading a secretive Starfleet division tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets. Among the stellar cast are Rob Kazinsky (Pacific Rim) and Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), who shared their experiences of stepping into the iconic universe. Olatunde Osunsanmi directs the feature film.
For Kazinsky, a lifelong Star Trek fan, joining the franchise was a dream come true. “I’ve always loved sci-fi. Star Trek is my biggest single fandom—I know every episode by heart,” he said. Reflecting on his role, Kazinsky described the thrill of suiting up in the film’s mech suit. “It was uncomfortable and painful, but I didn’t care—I was in space. It was the greatest joy I’ve ever had on a set.”

Ruygrok embraced the freedom to explore his character, Fuzz, describing him as a “wild card” with endless unpredictability. “I didn’t know what to expect, but we had such a strong team on and off set. We became a family, and that’s what I loved most—I walked away with lifelong friends.”
Both actors credited the film’s breathtaking set designs with helping them fully immerse in their roles.
Kazinsky praised production designer Paul Kirby’s work, especially the innovative AR wall technology. “I’ve worked on massive productions, but I’ve never seen anything as cool as that AR wall. Walking on the Terran ship’s bridge, recycled from Discovery, was surreal.”

Ruygrok echoed the sentiment, marveling at the functional elements of the sets. “Everything moved, bleeped, twitched, and turned—it made our work so much easier,” he shared.
As Kazinsky and Ruygrok join the ranks of Star Trek, fans can look forward to a visually stunning and emotionally rich addition to the franchise. Get ready to boldly go with Star Trek: Section 31, streaming Friday on Paramount+.
