The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, a cartoon classic, jumps to the big screen.

Released on this day in 2000, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle brought the beloved 1960s cartoon duo to a whole new audience. This adaptation offered a unique blend of live-action and animation. Directed by Des McAnuff, the film begins with Rocky the flying squirrel (June Foray) and Bullwinkle the moose (Keith Scott) stuck in the now deforested Frostbite Falls, trying to adjust to life after their TV series ended decades ago.
An All-Star Cast Faces Pottsylvanian Villains
Longtime enemies Fearless Leader, Boris Badenov, and Natasha Fatale escape into the real world, forcing our animated heroes to follow. The film’s live-action cast was comprised of talented actors. It featured Robert De Niro hamming it up as Fearless Leader, Jason Alexander playing the always-inept Boris, and Rene Russo shining as Natasha. Piper Perabo joins the cast as rookie FBI agent Karen Sympathy, assisting Rocky and Bullwinkle in stopping the Pottsylvanian plot to brainwash America through television.
Songs, Laughs, and Box Office Woes
The movie leaned into meta jokes, slapstick humor, and a fun soundtrack featuring Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man” and “Hooray for Hollywood.” Despite its nostalgia factor and star power, the film flopped financially, earning about $35 million on a $76 million budget.

Rocky & Bullwinkle Is A Nostalgic Blast 25 Years Later
