“Sarah’s Oil” Tells the True Story of One of America’s Youngest Black Millionaires

Sarah’s Oil is a powerful and inspirational true story.

This fall, Sarah’s Oil shines a light on the remarkable life of Sarah Rector, an African American girl who defied the odds in early 1900s Oklahoma and became one of the first Black female millionaires in the United States—at only 11 years old.

Born in Indian Territory and allotted a seemingly worthless piece of land, Sarah believed in something more: that oil was beneath the surface. Her belief was proven right, and the discovery would change not only her life but the lives of those around her.

Fighting for What’s Hers

As Sarah’s oil-rich land draws the attention of greedy oil speculators and opportunists, she must rely on her inner strength, her close-knit family, loyal friends, and a few rough-and-ready Texas wildcatters to keep control of her legacy. What follows is a powerful tale of resilience, community, and standing firm against those who would exploit her fortune.

A Star-Studded Cast

The film features a talented ensemble led by:

  • Naya Desir-Johnson (The Equalizer, A Thousand and One) as Sarah Rector
  • Zachary Levi (Shazam!, The Unbreakable Boy)
  • Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, Space Jam: A New Legacy)
  • Mel Rodriguez (Little Miss Sunshine, CSI: Vegas)

From Page to Screen

SaraOil Oil is inspired by Tonya Bolden’s acclaimed book, Searching for Sarah Rector. It is directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh (The Young Messiah), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh.
