1923 Stars Sebastian Roché & Brian Geraghty Reveal Filming Challenges

Sebastian Roché & Brian Geraghty on grit, survival, and filming 1923.

The second season of Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, the Yellowstone prequel starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, has arrived on Paramount+. As the latest chapter in the Dutton saga unfolds, actors Sebastian Roché and Brian Geraghty share insights into the grueling filming conditions and the challenges of stepping into a bygone era.

Speaking about the physically demanding aspects of filming, Roché recalled an intense moment while shooting a scene at the Crow Village. “It was supposed to be a temperate climate, and it was 110 degrees,” he said. “I was wearing this black hat and wool cassock, and I thought I was going to pass out. Between every take, I had to breathe in and try not to hyperventilate.” The sweltering heat near Austin, Texas, turned what should have been a standard shoot into a test of endurance.

Geraghty, on the other hand, faced the opposite extreme. “There were times when we were outside, and it was so cold that it was hard to act because you were so tense,” he shared. “Our costume designer set us up with electric thermals and socks, but cowboy boots can only hold so much warmth. The second you stepped outside, any moisture in your nose would freeze.” Despite the discomfort, both actors acknowledged that the harsh conditions added authenticity to their performances.

With 1923 immersing viewers in the rugged challenges of the early 20th century, the conversation turned to survival skills. Asked how they would fare if dropped into 1923 without modern conveniences, Roché was confident in his outdoor abilities. “I’m a mountaineer and rock climber, so I think I’d be pretty good at living in the outdoors,” he said. However, he admitted that marksmanship would be a struggle. “I wasn’t raised around guns, so I’d have to learn that skill. But I’m good with a bow!”

Geraghty took a more humorous approach, pointing out how even minor ailments were far deadlier in the past. “Getting a common cold could kill you back then,” he joked. “Or if I cut myself, I wouldn’t be able to take care of it. I’d probably lose a finger to gangrene!”

As the discussion veered toward time travel hypotheticals, the actors mused about what they might change if they could visit the past with modern knowledge. Roché suggested inventing crucial technologies, while Geraghty playfully proposed preventing certain advancements. “There’s this thing that’s going to ruin humanity… the Internet,” he quipped.

With season two of 1923 pushing the Duttons into even harsher conditions, Roché and Geraghty’s firsthand experiences bring an added layer of realism to the series. As fans brace for more twists, it’s clear that the actors’ dedication to authenticity extends far beyond the screen.
