SHAZAM! Star Grace Caroline Currey Talks Battling Bloodthirsty Dogs in Horror Satire “A Breed Apart”

Grace Caroline Currey unleashes laughs and terror in A Breed Apart.

Grace Caroline Currey is no stranger to thrills and chills, but in her latest film, A Breed Apart, the action-horror star gets to let loose — and have a little fun doing it.

“This movie is totally bonkers,” Currey said, laughing during a recent interview. “I don’t cry once in this movie, which is rare for me. It was just a blast. A silly, chaotic, good time.”

A Breed Apart, releasing May 16 in theaters, digitally, and on-demand, is a wild genre mashup that pits social media influencers against bloodthirsty dogs on a mysterious private island. Currey stars as Violet, a sharp, sarcastic survivor caught in the middle of a twisted, dog-fueled nightmare.

Directed by the Furst Brothers and featuring a stacked ensemble cast including Virginia Gardner, Riele Downs, Zak Steiner, Page Kennedy, Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile, and Hayden Panettiere, the film takes aim at influencer culture while embracing its own horror-comedy absurdity.

“I read the script in one sitting,” Currey said. “It was so ridiculous and entertaining. I loved how acerbic and cathartic Violet was. I’ve never done a monologue like that before — ranting about influencers while having a breakdown.”

Currey is best known to fans as Mary Marvel in DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods and for her lead role in the high-altitude thriller Fall reunited with Fall co-star Gardner for the project. The pair’s previous film unexpectedly surged in popularity once it hit streaming platforms, something Currey still finds surprising.

“You pour everything into something, and it feels intimate and small,” she said. “So to see it find an audience like that later — it’s so rewarding.”

Asked if she’d rather face one giant man-eating dog or a hundred small, selfie-stick-wielding pups, Currey didn’t hesitate: “I think I’ve got to do the final boss. The big one. I don’t want the blood of a hundred dogs on my hands.”

Despite the film’s gory premise, Currey insists the canine co-stars were anything but terrifying on set. “They were so cute! Their tongues were hanging out, their tails wagging. Honestly, they were better behaved than we were.”

As for what Currey kept from her time in the Shazam! universe? A humble pair of floral Crocs she wore in between takes — and some treasured memories.

Looking ahead, Currey’s game for more genre-defying roles — and maybe even a sisterly team-up with Jennifer Love Hewitt, whom she portrayed as a child in Ghost Whisperer. “That’s a brilliant idea,” Currey said. “Let’s make that happen.”

With A Breed Apart, Grace Caroline Currey proves she can deliver the laughs just as well as the screams. And this time, the only thing she’s crying is tears of laughter.
