Kim Coates and Charles Kinnane on Kevin James’ Leading Man Turn in Solo Mio – INTERVIEW

Kevin James embraces leading man status in Solo Mio.

Solo Mio is now playing in theaters, and it marks a refreshing return to romantic comedies built on heart, humor, and genuine character work. Directed by Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane, the film stars Kevin James, Alyson Hannigan, Kim Coates, and Jonathan Roumie.

Written by Kevin James, Patrick Kinnane, and John Kinnane, the story centers on a groom stranded in Rome after a wedding disaster leaves him heartbroken in the world’s happiest city. However, what begins as a ruined honeymoon slowly turns into something far more meaningful. With a determined local and a handful of meddling vacationing couples pushing him forward, heartbreak becomes the first step toward unexpected joy.

During my Nerdtropolis interview, Charles Kinnane and Kim Coates offered deeper insight into why this film feels both nostalgic and new and why Kevin James continues to shine as a leading man.

“It Felt Special While We Were Making It”

From the earliest days of production, Kinnane sensed the project had something rare. “Felt special while we were making it. It really did,” he said. “I think Kevin really wanted to create something from the beginning. The goal was let’s create a movie that feels like a throwback. Something that when people watch it, they feel the nostalgia of the classic rom-coms. And that’s really what we tried to do with this movie.”

That throwback tone was not accidental. Instead, it guided the performances and the atmosphere on set. Kinnane explained that the emotional core drove everything.

“The heart comes out of these characters,” he said. “And what Kim Coates brought with Kevin and the rest of the cast, it was honest to God … it was so special in such a deep way that I can’t even express how wonderful it was. Every moment of being on this, it was a dream. We’re still pinching ourselves.”

Italy’s setting certainly did not hurt, but the connection among the cast made the difference. At one point, when discussing the energy on set, Coates laughed about how eager everyone was to show up each day. “It really was fun to come to work every day,” he said.

A Romantic Comedy “That Hasn’t Been Done Like This in Decades”

For Coates, stepping into his first romantic comedy added another layer of excitement. “I’m just so happy to have been invited to come on this journey of a romantic comedy that hasn’t been done like this in decades,” he said. “It’s got heart. It’s super funny. Kevin does work in this film that he’s never done before. I’m in my first romantic comedy. This is no joke. This was so much fun.”

That comment stands out. Kevin James has built a career on comedy, yet Solo Mio gives him space to stretch emotionally. The film allows him to balance heartbreak with humor in a way that feels grounded rather than exaggerated.

Why Kevin James Is So Easy to Root For In Solo Mio

While discussing the film, I told Coates that Kevin James remains a true leading man. His reaction was immediate. “Great comment. You’re right,” Coates said.

He pointed to James’ personality as the key ingredient. “His ease of being funny and honest and self-deprecating and brilliant and just honest. He’s just a great guy,” Coates explained. “And when you start from there, he knows how to find talent, and he knows how to work again and again with talent.”

Coates emphasized how leadership shapes the entire production. “He’s inclusive of everyone,” he said. “And he’s a leading man, bro. You’re right. You want to root for him because he’s got that quality.” That authenticity radiates on screen. Audiences do not just laugh with his character. They travel with him. As Kinnane added during the conversation, “You want to go on the journey.”

Karaoke, Wine, and One-Take Magic

Off-screen moments strengthened the on-screen chemistry. Coates shared a story about filming a karaoke sequence built around “Drift Away.”

“We knew we had the rights to it. So we did it all that night,” Coates said. “There might have been some real wine consumed by me for sure.” The memory still resonates with the cast. “Every time since then that song might come on Jonathan’s radio or Kevin’s or mine, we tape it right away,” Coates said. “There’s always this nostalgic moment of that. That was a big night.”

Kinnane revealed that the spontaneity translated directly to the final cut. “We did a couple of takes of it, but the first one, that’s the first one we used.” That kind of authenticity cannot be manufactured. It speaks to the comfort level among the actors and the trust between the cast and directors.

A Leading Man Moment Worth Celebrating

Kevin James looks completely at ease carrying the film. His comedic instincts remain sharp, yet he leans into vulnerability without hesitation. Rome’s romantic backdrop amplifies that transformation, but it is James’s sincerity that anchors the story. Solo Mio feels like a reminder that romantic comedies can still deliver both laughs and heart without cynicism. Moreover, it proves that Kevin James’s leading man era is far from over.

Now playing in theaters, Solo Mio offers audiences a nostalgic escape filled with warmth, humor, and a performance that makes it impossible not to root for its star.
