Shadow and Robotnik steal the spotlight in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 zooms into theaters this weekend, delivering a power-packed adventure with bold twists, rich world-building, and a story that moves at supersonic speed. Fans of the beloved blue blur get ready to be blown away by what is easily the most ambitious installment of the franchise yet!
From the moment the movie begins, it’s clear just how much care and love went into crafting this sequel. Director Jeff Fowler and the entire team have poured their hearts into expanding Sonic’s world while staying true to the roots that made the series such a phenomenon. The Shadow and Maria storyline is the film’s emotional core, told with remarkable depth and nuance. It makes Shadow’s rage and pain not only understandable but deeply relatable, creating one of the most compelling arcs we’ve seen in a Sonic film. And let’s be honest: Shadow is a total badass. His brooding intensity and unmatched abilities add an electrifying dynamic to the story.
Of course, Team Sonic—featuring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles—is as delightful as ever. Their camaraderie and humor shine through, making every scene with them a joy to watch. Tails brings his signature genius and charm, Knuckles delivers hilarious moments of unintentional humor, and Sonic’s infectious energy perfectly ties it together. The voice cast deserves a standing ovation. Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), Idris Elba (Knuckles), and Keanu Reeves as Shadow deliver flawless performances that capture the essence of their characters.

The action scenes are super exciting, the scenery is bright and creative, and the way it’s shot makes everything feel epic. There are tons of Easter eggs and nods for fans of the video games, cartoons, and earlier films. Without giving anything away, know you’ll want to stay alert because some incredible surprises are in store!
But the true MVP of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is Jim Carrey. Returning in dual roles as Dr. Robotnik and his grandpa Gerald Robotnik, Carrey delivers an equal parts hilarious, sinister, and nostalgic performance. This is classic Jim Carrey at his finest, and he steals every scene he’s in. His comedic timing and larger-than-life energy are a perfect fit for the wacky world of Sonic. I cannot imagine anyone else to play Robotnik.
As much as this film excels, it leaves us wanting more from the franchise. The interactions with humans are well-executed. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 teases the possibility of exploring other worlds. That’s where the series truly needs to go. Leaving Earth behind and diving deeper into Sonic’s expansive universe could elevate future films to even greater heights.
I give Sonic the Hedgehog 3 4.5 out of 5 stars. It is an exhilarating ride that’s perfect for the holiday season. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to Sonic’s adventures, this movie has something for everyone. It’s fun, heartfelt, and packed with action. Sonic fans, don’t miss this one!
