Knuckles – Series Review

The Knuckles series is a must-watch for any Sonic fan.

In the latest installment of the Sonic universe, Knuckles steps into the spotlight with his own solo adventure, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride. As a longtime fan of the Sonic games, seeing one of my favorite characters take center stage was a treat, and the Knuckles series delivers on all fronts.

From the get-go, it’s clear that this series is all about fun and campiness. But don’t let that fool you; there’s plenty of sharp wit and creativity packed into every episode. Surprisingly, the standout character isn’t Knuckles himself, but Wade, who was played brilliantly by Adam Pally. However, when Knuckles, voiced by the incomparable Idris Elba, does take the spotlight, he shines brightly with his clever dialogue and charismatic presence.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, with familiar faces like Sonic and Tails appearing alongside new characters played by Cary Elwes and voiced by Christopher Lloyd. The inclusion of talents like Kid Cudi, Edi Patterson, and Julian Barratt adds even more depth to an already stellar lineup. Visually, the series is stunning, with cinematic-quality animation that brings the action to life in vibrant detail. And speaking of action, there’s plenty of it to go around, with thrilling sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

But it’s not just about the action; at its core, the Knuckles series is a story of self-discovery and mentorship, as Knuckles takes on the role of teacher to the eager but bumbling Wade. The series is set between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It offers an engaging plot filled with humor and heart. Also, there are tons of easter eggs and callbacks to the video games, and I will say one episode goes all in.

Continuity and consistency are the driving forces behind the series.

It is evident by the entire creative team returning from the previous films. The project is once again spearheaded by director and executive producer Jeff Fowler, whose vision and expertise shine through every frame. Fowler’s direction of the pilot episode ensures a seamless transition from big screen to small screen while maintaining the signature cinematic animation style that fans have come to love. Alongside Fowler, Neal H. Moritz also makes a triumphant return, bringing his wealth of experience and passion for storytelling to the series, ensuring that Knuckles’s journey is in the best hands possible.

Verdict

I give the Knuckles series a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. While I would have liked to see even more action, the show’s impressive visuals, witty writing, and memorable characters more than make up for it. I can’t wait to see where Knuckles’s adventures take him next. And if you’re a fan of bowling, get ready for a strike overload! Catch the show on Paramount+ starting April 26th.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
