The long-awaited Spaceballs sequel arrives in theaters in 2027.

After decades of fan anticipation, Spaceballs 2 is officially happening. Amazon MGM Studios announced that comedy legend Mel Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt in the new sequel to his 1987 sci-fi spoof Spaceballs. Even more exciting, Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement to once again suit up as the villainous Dark Helmet.
A Return to the Galaxy of Laughs
The original Spaceballs was directed by and starring Mel Brooks. It was a loving parody of Star Wars and other sci-fi blockbusters of the era. It followed the adventures of Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), Barf (John Candy), and the wise Yogurt (Brooks), who guided them with the mystical power of “The Schwartz.” The film became an instant cult classic thanks to its sharp humor, memorable characters, and endless quotable lines.
Nearly 40 years later, the franchise is being revived for a new generation. The upcoming sequel is described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” teasing a fresh story while honoring the original’s comedic legacy.
New Faces Join the Franchise
Josh Gad will star in Spaceballs 2 and will also be producing the film. Gad joins Brooks and an all-star producing team. It includes Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody and director Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar). The screenplay comes from Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad himself.

Plot details are still being kept secret, but with both Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis returning, fans can expect the same irreverent humor and hilarious sci-fi send-ups that made the original a favorite. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2027.
May The Merchandising Begin!
With the original film famously poking fun at Hollywood’s obsession with merchandising, expect Spaceballs 2 to lean into that meta-joke once again. As Yogurt would say, “Merchandising! Merchandising! Where the real money from the movie is made.”
