Adam Sandler will play a different role in his upcoming Netflix movie “Spaceman.” In the film, directed by Johan Renck and adapted from Jaroslav Kalfař’s novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” Sandler portrays an introspective astronaut floating in space. He is an astronaut on a research mission alone at the solar system’s edge. While grappling with the realization that his marriage may be falling apart back on Earth, Jakub encounters a mysterious creature named Hanuš, voiced by Paul Dano, who comes from the beginning of time. Hanuš becomes Jakub’s confidant as he tries to salvage his relationship with his wife, Lenka, portrayed by Carey Mulligan. The core of “Spaceman” centers around the connection between Jakub and Lenka. Director Renck highly praises Mulligan’s portrayal of Lenka, highlighting her technical abilities and genuine authenticity in embodying the character. The movie delves into themes of love, space, time, and the intricacies of human relationships set against an intergalactic voyage.

The story started as a short story he wrote during college. Initially, the story was a simple punch line about an astronaut going through a divorce. However, Kalfař developed it into a more complex narrative that included themes of love, space, and his Czech heritage, adding depth to the story. The movie features a talented cast, including Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini alongside Sandler, Dano, and Mulligan. Sandler’s commitment to his character as a Czech astronaut is evident as he engaged in discussions about Czech history and heritage during the quarantine period.

“Spaceman” is scheduled to premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. It will then be released on Netflix on March 1, 2024. The movie promises to be an exceptional and thought-provoking adventure as Adam Sandler takes on a new cosmic journey with the support of a talented cast and a narrative that blends the personal and the celestial.
