Vicky Jenson’s Spellbound is A Fairy Tale with a Heartfelt Twist – Interview

Netflix’s Spellbound offers plenty of heartfelt lessons.

Netflix’s Spellbound is a breathtaking animated adventure that masterfully combines fantasy, music, and poignant family themes. The film is directed by the renowned Vicky Jenson. Her credits include the Oscar-winning Shrek. It explores familial bonds, resilience, and self-discovery. These themes are seen through the lens of a magical, song-filled fairy tale.

The story follows Ellian.

She is the resourceful daughter of Lumbria’s rulers, who embarks on a daring quest to break a mysterious spell that has turned her parents into monsters. Jenson revealed in our interview that the film’s design draws deeply from early Spanish influences, celebrating the region’s Moorish architecture and rich cultural heritage. “We wanted Lumbria to stand out,” Jenson said. “Using elements like rounded domes, intricate archways, and regal Spanish-inspired costumes gave the world its unique, enchanting feel.” Watch the entire conversation below!

The film’s emotional core lies in its honest portrayal of family challenges. Spellbound encourages open communication and mutual understanding by tackling themes like separation and self-blame from a child’s perspective. “We wanted families to connect with this,” Jenson explained. “It’s about showing that even when things feel fractured, love and respect can hold everything together.”

Jenson also shared how the movie’s narrative was guided by a clear vision from the outset. “Knowing what this movie had to say gave us a North Star,” she said. “It made every creative decision sharper, ensuring everything supported the story’s emotional core.”

The movie features a stellar voice cast.

It consists of Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, and Jenifer Lewis, alongside Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman as Lumbria’s monarchs. Their reunion after Being the Ricardos was a delightful coincidence. “We were just aiming for the best talent, and it was incredible that they both said yes,” Jenson shared.

A key element of Spellbound is its music, composed by the legendary Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater. The songs enrich the storytelling and reflect Lumbria’s cultural essence. Jenson highlighted how music played a pivotal role in shaping the film’s identity. “We worked closely with Menken to weave in themes that matched the magical yet grounded tone of the story,” she said.

Jenson, an animation industry veteran, reflected on how the medium has evolved, celebrating the increasing diversity of voices and stories. “Animation has become more inclusive, and that’s opened doors for incredible imagination,” she said, adding that visually, animation is embracing a return to artistry, blending hand-drawn influences into CGI.

With its dazzling visuals, heartfelt themes, and unforgettable music, Spellbound showcases Netflix’s and Skydance Animation’s commitment to high-quality storytelling. As Jenson summed up, “It’s a story about love, resilience, and finding strength in unexpected places.”

Spellbound is now streaming on Netflix. It is a magical and deeply moving experience for audiences of all ages.
