From Jaws to Jurassic Park: Spielberg Festival Takes Over Film Forum

Film Forum Presents Spielberg Summer Blockbuster Festival.

Film Forum will host Spielberg: A Summer of Blockbusters. It is a two-week festival celebrating the iconic works of American director Steven Spielberg. From August 30 to September 12, cinephiles can experience 20 of Spielberg’s most beloved films, many presented in their original 35mm format. The festival kicks off with Jaws (1975), the thriller that set the standard for summer blockbusters. Audiences can relive the tension as Chief Brody, played by Roy Scheider, faces off against the Great White shark that terrorizes the fictional Amity Island. Screening dates include a special 3-D presentation on September 2.

It is a heartwarming sci-fi fable that captured the imaginations of audiences worldwide. The film, which earned nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, will be shown on September 2, 4, 5, and 12. Another highlight is Jurassic Park (1993), a groundbreaking adventure that brought dinosaurs to life with cutting-edge visual effects. The story of a theme park where man and nature collide will be screened on September 1, 2, 3, 5, and 12.

The festival will also showcase Spielberg’s theatrical feature directorial debut, The Sugarland Express (1974).

Starring Goldie Hawn, this film marks the first of many collaborations between Spielberg and composer John Williams. The newly restored 4K version will be shown on several dates, starting on August 30. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), another Spielberg classic, will transport viewers into the action-packed world of Indiana Jones. The film won five Academy Awards and is part of the festival’s lineup, alongside the other two films in the beloved Indiana Jones trilogy: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

The festival includes Schindler’s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998) for those interested in Spielberg’s dramatic and historical works. Schindler’s List, a powerful portrayal of the Holocaust, will be screened on September 6 and 8. Saving Private Ryan, an epic World War II drama, will play on September 6 and 11. Film enthusiasts can also enjoy Spielberg’s earlier works. Duel (1971) is his made-for-TV debut about a motorist terrorized by a mysterious truck driver, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) is an exploration of extraterrestrial contact.

The festival features an array of Spielberg’s diverse filmography.
