St. Elmo’s Fire Returns for 40th Anniversary Theatrical Re-Release

Brat Pack Classic St. Elmo’s Fire back on the big screen.

The Brat Pack is back. Joel Schumacher’s St. Elmo’s Fire, one of the definitive films of the 1980s, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a newly restored 4K presentation. The coming-of-age drama returns to select theaters across North America for a one-week limited engagement starting Friday, October 17.

A Story of Friendship and Growing Up

Originally released in 1985, St. Elmo’s Fire follows a tight-knit group of seven recent Georgetown University graduates as they navigate the challenges of adulthood. Against the backdrop of their local hangout, St. Elmo’s Bar, the film explores the complexities of love, friendship, and finding one’s place in “the real world.”

The ensemble cast features Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. These actors became icons of the era. Their performances helped define the “Brat Pack” generation on screen.

Characters Caught Between Youth and Adulthood

The film’s interwoven storylines highlight the struggles of post-college life. Leslie and Alex (Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson) wrestle with the collapse of a once-stable romance. Wendy (Mare Winningham), shy and reserved, hides her feelings for Billy (Rob Lowe), a charming yet reckless husband and father. Kevin (Andrew McCarthy), a cynical writer, discovers love where he least expects it.

Meanwhile, law student Kirbo (Emilio Estevez) becomes fixated on an older woman, while Jules (Demi Moore) embodies the glamour and chaos of fast-paced city living. Together, their intertwined journeys paint a vivid portrait of youthful ambition, heartbreak, and the bonds of friendship.

Joel Schumacher’s Enduring Vision

Directed by Joel Schumacher and co-written with Carl Kurlander, St. Elmo’s Fire remains a cultural touchstone nearly four decades later. The film’s mix of romance, drama, and timeless 1980s style continues to resonate with audiences both old and new. Its return to theaters offers a rare chance to see the movie on the big screen once more, in the best quality to date.

Limited Engagement This October

Fans of the Brat Pack, ‘80s cinema, or simply a great story about growing up won’t want to miss this re-release. St. Elmo’s Fire opens Friday, October 17, for one week only in select North American theaters.
