Stand by Me returns to theaters for its 40th anniversary beginning March 27.

Columbia Pictures is bringing Stand by Me back to the big screen for its 40th anniversary. The beloved 1986 coming-of-age drama returns to select theaters for a one-week engagement beginning March 27.
Directed by Rob Reiner and based on Stephen King‘s novella “The Body,” Stand by Me remains one of the most iconic Stephen King adaptations. Unlike King’s horror-heavy stories, this film leans into friendship, grief, and the fragile transition from childhood to adulthood.
Four decades later, the Stand by Me 40th anniversary theatrical re-release gives longtime fans and new audiences a chance to experience the film the way it was meant to be seen — in a dark theater, with every laugh, tear, and train rumble amplified.
What Is Stand by Me About?
Set in Castle Rock, Oregon, Stand by Me follows four 12-year-old boys who set out to find the body of a missing teenager. What begins as a quest for attention quickly becomes a deeply personal journey.
Gordie LaChance, played by Wil Wheaton, is a quiet, aspiring writer struggling with loss at home. When his best friend Vern overhears his older brother talking about the location of a dead body in the woods, Gordie and his friends decide to track it down.

Joining Gordie are Vern, played by Jerry O’Connell, the loyal and thoughtful Chris Chambers, portrayed by River Phoenix, and the unpredictable Teddy Duchamp, played by Corey Feldman. Lurking nearby is Ace Merrill, played by Kiefer Sutherland, whose presence adds tension and danger.
As the boys travel along railroad tracks and through dense forest, the story shifts from adventure to reflection. Each character confronts fears, trauma, and the reality that childhood cannot last forever.
The Scene That Still Haunts Me
Even 40 years later, one moment in Stand by Me still gets under my skin.
The leech scene.

Watching the boys wade through the swamp and later discover their bodies covered in leeches is pure nightmare fuel. The image of Gordie pulling one from his skin remains deeply unsettling. It is not flashy horror, yet it lingers. That scene captures the vulnerability of youth better than any monster ever could.
Seeing that sequence on the big screen again during the Stand by Me 40th anniversary run might be just as uncomfortable as it was decades ago.
Where the Cast Is Now
The legacy of Stand by Me extends far beyond its 1986 release.
River Phoenix delivered one of the most powerful performances of his young career as Chris Chambers. His tragic death in 1993 at just 23 years old cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s great “what could have been” talents.

Wil Wheaton went on to star in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later became a prominent voice in geek culture. Jerry O’Connell built a steady career in film and television, including voice work and hosting roles. Corey Feldman continued acting and later pursued a music career, while remaining a recognizable face of 1980s cinema. Kiefer Sutherland went on to global fame with 24 and remains a respected presence in television and film.
Director Rob Reiner also built an impressive filmography, including modern classics. His work on Stand by Me remains one of his career’s defining achievements.
Why the Stand by Me 40th Anniversary Matters
The Stand by Me 40th anniversary theatrical re-release is more than nostalgia. The film captures a specific moment in youth that feels universal. The friendships feel real. The pain feels honest. The dialogue still hits.
The movie reminds viewers of a time when summer adventures felt endless, and friendships felt permanent. At the same time, it never ignores the heartbreak that shapes young lives.
For many of us, Stand by Me was a film we saw too young but never forgot. It introduced a generation to emotionally grounded storytelling and proved that a Stephen King adaptation did not need horror to leave a mark.

Beginning March 27, audiences can once again walk the tracks with Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern as Stand by Me returns to theaters for its 40th anniversary.
