Brie Larson and Benny Safdie join the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Illumination and Nintendo have officially premiered the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the next chapter in the beloved animated franchise. The reveal took place during a Nintendo Direct presentation, confirming the film’s worldwide release through Universal Pictures in April 2026.
Expanding the Super Mario Cinematic Universe
Following the massive success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion globally, Illumination and Nintendo are taking their partnership beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into outer space. The new adventure draws inspiration from the hit video game Super Mario Galaxy. It promises a star-studded cosmic journey filled with familiar faces and exciting new characters.

The sequel reunites the creative team behind the first film. It includes directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, screenwriter Matthew Fogel, and composer Brian Tyler. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri once again produces alongside Nintendo’s legendary Shigeru Miyamoto.
Returning Heroes and New Faces
The returning voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Two major new characters join the lineup: Brie Larson lends her voice to the celestial guardian Rosalina, while Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr.
Global Release Details
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit theaters in the United States and several international markets on April 3, 2026. It will be followed by a Japan release on April 24, 2026. Select territories will roll out throughout the month of April.
Nintendo’s Expanding Film Universe
The trailer’s release marks another major step in Nintendo’s cinematic expansion. Alongside Mario’s return to the big screen, the company is also developing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, signaling that Nintendo’s movie ambitions are only growing.
