Morgan Spurlock was an Academy Award nomnated Documentary filmmaker.

Morgan Spurlock, the award-winning documentary filmmaker, died in New York on May 23, 2024. He was 53. Spurlock passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, following complications from cancer, his family announced today. “It was a sad day as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” said Craig Spurlock, who collaborated with him on several projects. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”
Spurlock achieved worldwide recognition with his 2004 documentary, “Super Size Me,” which earned him an Oscar nomination. The film exposed the health risks of fast food and significantly influenced the conversation about dietary habits in America. It remains a staple in middle and high school health classes. Known for his fearless approach, Spurlock utilized humor and wit to challenge societal norms and provoke critical thinking. Over thirteen years, he produced and directed nearly 70 documentary films and television series through his production company, Warrior Poets.

Spurlock’s work often tackled controversial and difficult topics.
His projects included the U.S. war in Afghanistan (“Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?”), minimum wage and immigrant labor (FX’s “30 Days”), consumer susceptibility to marketing (“The Greatest Movie Ever Sold”), trophy hunting and body modification (Showtime’s “7 Deadly Sins”), elder care and gambling (CNN’s “Morgan Spurlock Inside Man”), and corporate pressure on family farms (“Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!”) in 2019.
Spurlock valued the creative contributions of his team, developing a network of freelance production professionals who frequently collaborated with him. An avid art enthusiast, he amassed an extensive collection of modern art that adorned his home and office at Warrior Poets in SoHo, New York. Morgan Spurlock is survived by his two sons, Laken and Kallen; his mother, Phyllis Spurlock; his father, Ben Spurlock (Iris); his brothers, Craig Spurlock (Carolyn) and Barry Spurlock (Buffy); multiple nieces and nephews; and his former spouses, Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein, the mothers of his children. The family plans to announce memorial service arrangements soon. In honor of Spurlock’s legacy, donations to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in New York City are encouraged.
