James Gunn’s Superman Trailer Brings New Hope to the DC Universe

Superman trailer delivers hope and thrills.

The first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman has finally landed, offering fans a much-anticipated glimpse into the next chapter of DC Studios’ cinematic universe. David Corenswet steps into the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent, joined by Rachel Brosnahan as the intrepid journalist Lois Lane. The film promises a fresh take on the legendary hero, focusing on his dual legacy as both a Kryptonian and a farm boy from Smallville.

The trailer teases a story set in a world where Superman is already established. Gunn confirmed, “We just start in the middle of the action. Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning.” Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor looms as a key antagonist, and the dynamic between Luthor and Superman looks to delve into their long-standing rivalry.

The ensemble cast includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, both of whom draw inspiration from the Justice Society of America’s 1990s comic designs. Nathan Fillion steps into the Green Lantern Guy Gardner role, reportedly sporting the character’s signature bowl cut. Meanwhile, Anthony Carrigan will portray Metamorpho, a character with the ability to transmute into various elements. María Gabriela de Faría joins as The Engineer, further broadening the film’s roster of DC heroes.

Beyond the heroes, Gunn has layered the film with rich relationships.

Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell play the Kents, poised to shape Clark’s moral compass, while Wendell Pierce’s Perry White and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen promise to bring warmth and humor to the Daily Planet.

Gunn’s vision embraces the fantastical while staying emotionally grounded. “I start with a place that’s very hopeful, fun… but incredibly grounded,” Gunn said, noting that the film blends humor, heart, and spectacle. He also cited All-Star Superman as a significant influence, highlighting the Silver Age’s science-fiction tone and Lex Luthor’s genius bordering on sorcery.

The trailer showcases awe-inspiring action, much of which is filmed with advanced drone technology. Gunn revealed that the team drew inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick to achieve dynamic aerial sequences. Superman’s flight scenes promise to be more immersive than ever, adding a new level of realism to the superhero genre.

On the costume front, Gunn confirmed Superman will wear the classic red trunks. “Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him… He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows hope and positivity.” Fans can also expect a new musical approach, with a score by John Murphy blending iconic nods to John Williams’ original theme.

Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025, and the trailer clearly shows that Gunn’s fresh vision for the Man of Steel aims to balance nostalgia with modern storytelling, delivering a Superman who embodies hope, strength, and humanity.
