The First Omen is a hauntingly disturbing prequel.

As I was on my way to the cinema to watch The First Omen, I couldn’t help but feel hesitant. It’s a well-known fact that sequels and prequels, especially those produced decades after the original, often struggle to live up to the expectations set by their predecessors. While the film’s R rating provided some reassurance that it wouldn’t hold back, I was still caught off guard by the chilling journey that unfolded before me.
“The First Omen” is a horror movie that gradually builds up tension, but its impact is profound. The film presents disturbing images that stay in the audience’s mind long after the credits roll. The filmmakers have skillfully incorporated psychological elements into the storyline, which keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats and often leads to covering their eyes in fear and disgust. The cast of the movie is exceptional, with Nell Tiger Free, known for her role in “Servant,” delivering a memorable performance that leaves a lasting impression. Each actor has fully immersed themselves in their role, adding depth and authenticity to the overall experience.

Without delving into spoilers, it’s worth mentioning how beautifully “The First Omen” connects to its 1976 predecessor. The film seamlessly ties in with the original storyline, offering fans a satisfying glimpse into the origins of the chilling tale. Directed by Arkasha Stevenson in her directorial debut and based on characters created by David Seltzer, “The First Omen” transports viewers to Rome, where a young American woman embarks on a journey of faith and self-discovery. However, her encounters with darkness lead her down a path fraught with danger as she uncovers a sinister conspiracy intent on unleashing evil incarnate upon the world.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast.
It includes Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy, who each bring their characters to life as members of the church. With a gripping story penned by Ben Jacoby, “The First Omen” is a must-see for fans of the horror genre and especially fans of the original film The Omen. However, if you squirm easily you will have a tough time swallowing what is in front as there is no lack of female body horror.
Verdict
I give “The First Omen” 4 out of 5 stars as it surpasses expectations. It delivers a bone-chilling tale of terror that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. With its haunting imagery, stellar performances, and seamless connection to the original film, this prequel is sure to satisfy both die-hard fans and newcomers alike.
