David Arquette and Nick Jonas Deliver Powerful Performances in The Good Half – Movie Review

The Good Half is a perfect blend of humor and heartache.

In Robert Schwartzman’s latest film, “The Good Half,” we are taken on an emotional journey that dives deep into the complexities of the mother-son relationship and the complex grief process. Starring Nick Jonas, Brittany Snow, David Arquette, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Walsh, and Elisabeth Shue, this film is a touching portrayal of loss, healing, and the ties that bind families together. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing both the director, Robert Schwartzman, and David Arquette. Learn about their insights into the film and characters below!

In The Good Half, Renn Wheeland (Nick Jonas) returns home to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. As he navigates this painful time, he forges new relationships and mends old ones, all while facing his unresolved issues and confronting his grief head-on.

On paper, the cast might seem like a random mix.

However, in reality, they deliver solid performances that blend seamlessly together. Nick Jonas, often underrated, shines as Renn, bringing a nuanced portrayal of a son grappling with the loss of his mother. His ability to balance moments of humor and heartache makes his character incredibly relatable and endearing.

David Arquette really stands out in his performance. He brings to life a narcissistic character who is supposed to be unlikable, yet Arquette infuses him with qualities that resonate with the audience. His tense and humorous interactions with Jonas create some of the film’s most memorable scenes. The chemistry between the cast members is palpable, making the relationships in the film feel authentic and deeply affecting.

“The Good Half” expertly balances humor and heartache, capturing the realistic portrayal of grief and healing. The relationship between Renn and his mother is central to the story. Their bond is explored through flashbacks and memories, highlighting the love and complexities inherent in any family dynamic.

Director Robert Schwartzman, known for “The Unicorn,” “Dreamland,” and “The Argument,” brings a sensitive touch to this film. His background includes an acting career and a successful stint with the rock band Rooney. His experience gives him an understanding of emotional depth and character development. Schwartzman’s direction ensures that each scene is crafted with care, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in Renn’s journey.

It is a beautiful film that tackles difficult themes gracefully and authentically.

The fantastic cast, featuring diverse, talented actors, delivers powerful, heartfelt performances. With Schwartzman at the helm and a script penned by Brett Ryland, the film strikes a perfect balance between humor and heartache, offering a realistic portrayal of grief and the healing process.
