Matt Damon and Casey Affleck lead a chaotic heist in The Instigators.

Directed by Doug Liman and penned by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, “The Instigators” offers a mix of thrills and frustrations as it navigates the heist genre with a notable ensemble cast. Starring Matt Damon and Affleck as Rory and Cobby—two unlikely partners in crime—the film’s strongest suit is its star-studded lineup.

Damon and Affleck shine as Rory, a desperate dad, and Cobby, an ex-con, who get roped into pulling off a heist targeting a crooked politician’s fortune. Their connection is so real, driving much of the movie’s energy and humor. Things kick off with a failed robbery, throwing the duo into a crazy scramble that keeps things lively, even if a bit all over the place.
Hong Chau joins the fray as Rory’s therapist, who is roped into their misadventure. Chau’s performance adds a fresh dynamic to the film, though her character’s motivations sometimes feel underdeveloped. Supporting roles by Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones flesh out the story, though the impact of their appearances varies. Despite the strong cast, the film struggles with its execution. The screenplay by MacLean and Affleck is packed with potential. However, at times leans on clichéd dialogue and predictable plot twists. The narrative’s momentum falters as it juggles multiple threads, from vengeful crime bosses to bumbling bureaucrats, resulting in a familiar story.

Doug Liman’s direction infuses “The Instigators” with a frenetic energy, aligning with the film’s chaotic heist and getaway sequences. However, this same energy sometimes undermines the coherence of the plot, making the film feel like a high-octane rollercoaster with some shaky moments. The film’s humor and action are enjoyable, and the cast’s performances elevate it above mediocrity. Yet, the lack of a cohesive narrative and uneven pacing dampen its overall impact.
Verdict
I give The Insitagors 3 out of 5 stars. “The Instigators” offers a lively watch for fans of heist films and its impressive cast, but it may leave others feeling like it’s a case of style over substance. It streams on Apple TV+ starting August 9th and will be in select theaters on August 2nd.
