The Long Game – Movie Review

The Long Game was shown during the Houston Latino Film Festival.

“The Long Game” is important to Texas’s tapestry of Hispanic experiences. It highlights the resilience and determination of a group of young Mexican American caddies in 1955. Directed by Julio Quintana, the film immerses audiences in the heart of racial tensions and discrimination faced by the Hispanic community during that era. One of the film’s strengths is its unflinching portrayal of the racism and adversity experienced by the golfers. It doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of the time, allowing viewers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Hispanics in Texas. Through the lens of these young caddies, audiences are introduced to an enlightening and eye-opening story.

However, while “The Long Game” succeeds in shedding light on this lesser-known narrative, it falls short of fully exploring the backstories of its characters. While we get glimpses into their lives, the film could have delved deeper into their journeys and the factors that shaped them. This missed opportunity detracts slightly from the overall impact of the story.

The film boasts a talented cast that brings its characters to life.

Jay Hernandez delivers a compelling performance, showcasing his leading talents and anchoring the narrative with conviction. The young cast members, including Julian Works, José Julián, Gregory Diaz IV, and Christian Gallego, shine in their respective roles. At the same time, Jaina Lee Ortiz and Paulina Chavez, the film’s leading women, truly show how strong Hispanic women are.

The entire cast infuses the film with authenticity and emotional depth. And, of course, Cheech Marin adds his trademark charm and humor, reminding audiences why he’s always a welcome presence on screen. In typical fashion, Dennis Quaid delivers a solid performance, embodying his character with the gravitas and authenticity we have come to expect from him. However, some of the film’s creative choices occasionally detract from the overall storytelling experience, leading to moments of shallowness.

Verdict

I give “The Long Game” 3.5 out of 5 stars. Despite its occasional missteps, it offers both insight and entertainment. While it may still need to fully realize its potential in certain aspects, it succeeds in shedding light on a compelling piece of history and sparking meaningful conversations about race and identity.
