Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman bring Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel to life in Prime Video’s The Love Hypothesis.

Can fake love eventually turn into real love? That’s an idea that’s been seen by readers of The Love Hypothesis, a best-selling novel by Ali Hazelwood that’s been popularized on TikTok. Now, Hazelwood’s popular story is jumping to screens with Prime Video’s live-action adaptation, releasing this September.
The official trailer for Prime Video’s The Love Hypothesis released, which sees Olive, played by Riverdale‘s Lili Reinhart, trying to get back at her friend for falling in love with her crush. However, what is seen originally as a fake relationship meant to be revenge slowly turns into something much more interesting and beautiful than Olive could even imagine.
The Love Hypothesis sees aspiring Ph.D. candidate Olive trying to focus on her academics, despite her friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) falling in love with her crush, Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay). To get back at Ahn, Olive sparks an impulsive relationship with her professor, Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman). What begins as desperation turns into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. However, as Olive and Adam continue sticking together, Olive discovers that real love might be the worth the risks.
How Did The Love Hypothesis Become Popular?
Before Hazelwood published The Love Hypothesis, the original story was actually based on a fanfiction Hazelwood wrote involving Star Wars characters, Kylo Ren and Rey. Originally titled “Head Over Feet”, this story was focused on the “Reylo” relationship that many fans of that franchise loved to see. However, when Hazelwood’s story became popular online, all references to Star Wars were changed to Hazelwood’s own ideas. This led to the main characters being named as they are in the current story, with Adam being inspired by Adam Driver.

Once TikTok and Instagram picked up The Love Hypothesis, the novel became a bestseller, garnering a massive following online and opening the door for this live-action adaptation. The adaptation had been in development since October 2022, but now, fans can finally see Olive and Adam’s love come into the light. Plus, for some, Bateman’s casting may be more than a coincidence as the star is married to Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in Star Wars‘ sequel trilogy.
Prime Video’s The Love Hypothesis Is About Action and Reaction
In addition to Reinhart, Bateman, Marsh, and Duvernay, the main cast of The Love Hypothesis also includes Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan. The adaptation is directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild.
The Love Hypothesis premieres on Wednesday, September 23, on Prime Video.
