The Sheep Detectives Review: Hugh Jackman Leads a Charming Mystery That Tackles Big Themes For Young Audiences

The Sheep Detectives is cute, clever, and slightly predictable fun.

‘The Sheep Detectives’ is not only an absolutely delightful experience, but it acts as an incredible gateway film for young viewers to experience some tougher lessons that are commonplace in mystery tales. Heavy themes like the inevitability of death and greed are made accessible to younger viewers due in large part to the approachable talking sheep experiencing these events.

Based on the 2005 novel, ‘Three Bags Full’. ‘The Sheep Detectives’ revolves around a flock of sheep who must investigate the alleged murder of their beloved shepherd, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman).

Hugh Jackman Brings Warmth to the Story

Prior to his untimely death, Hardy lived a solitary life with his flock of sheep, whom he treated as if they were his own kin. He spent the days protecting and caring for them, and the evenings reading aloud mystery novels to the captivated audience of sheep, whether they understood or not. Jackman’s charm is on full display here, and it’s clear why the sheep treat him with immense reverence.

A Star-Studded Voice Cast Brings the Sheep to Life

When the film turns to the perspective of the sheep, we hear their voices through a diverse voice cast that includes the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby, who all bring a unique persona to the computer-generated sheep they inhabit.

Director Kyle Balda’s Animation Expertise Shines

Director Kyle Balda comes from an extensive animation background, having worked as an animator on several Pixar films, and co-directing Illumination films, including two ‘Minions’ films and the third entry in the main ‘Despicable Me’ franchise. Balda’s experience lends itself well to the animation of the sheep, who are each so defined and memorable.

Balancing Innocence with Life’s Harsh Realities

The sheep themselves have their own childlike ignorance and understanding of the world. For example, the sheep think that instead of dying, they one day will become the clouds in the sky. In addition, the sheep can make themselves forget anything at will, allowing them to live a life without trauma or sadness. When they discover their shepherd is dead, the sheep have to come to grips with the reality of the workings of the world at large. While things aren’t always pretty, seeing it through their innocent eyes could bring some understanding of coping with death to younger viewers without overly sugarcoating it.

A Familiar Mystery with a Fresh Perspective

The supporting cast of human characters is rounded out by an eclectic group, including Emma Thompson, Hong Chao, Nicholas Galitzine (He-Man himself), Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole, and more. Each of these character actors fills the stock murder-mystery tropes, such as the bumbling small-town policeman, the reporter from out of town, the innocent daughter of the murder victim, a rival shepherd, and more.

A Simple Mystery Elevated by Charm

While the actual murder mystery at hand isn’t all that twisty or difficult to figure out, the charming nature of the sheep perspective will allow audiences to have fun with what could have otherwise been a relatively ordinary mystery.

Verdict

‘The Sheep Detectives’ is full of wit, colorful visuals, and an absolutely delightful array of memorable sheep characters. While the mystery at the center may leave something to be desired, it can be easily overlooked by the sheer amount of charm on display.
