Max Minghella looks back on The Social Network as the film celebrates its 15th anniversary.

Fifteen years ago, The Social Network debuted in theaters and quickly became one of the defining films of the 2010s. It was directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin. The drama chronicled the creation of Facebook and the lawsuits that followed. The film cemented its place in cinema history with three Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Original Score.
A Story of Ambition and Betrayal
Based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, the film follows Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg. His drive to build a social networking platform came with personal and legal costs. Zuckerberg faced lawsuits from twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who accused him of stealing their idea. He also faced a lawsuit from Eduardo Saverin, his co-founder and best friend, who was forced out of the business.
The film starred Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg. Also starring were Andrew Garfield as Saverin, Armie Hammer as the Winklevoss twins, and Justin Timberlake as Napster co-founder Sean Parker. Timberlake even met Parker in real life before shooting began. The Social Network grossed over $224 million worldwide, becoming a box office and critical hit.
Max Minghella Looks Back
Max Minghella, who appeared in the film, recently reflected on the experience when I asked how The Social Network influenced his own work as a filmmaker.

“I haven’t thought about that movie in so long, but it’s… it was an amazing experience working with David Fincher on that, of course, and he’s so brilliant with actors,” Minghella said. “One of the things I really enjoyed about working with him is the ability to try things. He really allows you as an actor to explore, not feel rushed. He’s actually very efficient with his time on set, but he creates the opportunity for the performers to really have a go at it and not feel rigid. That I really appreciate and try to bring into my own work.”
Minghella now directs Shell, starring Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson, Arian Moayed, Este Haim, Elizabeth Berkley, and Kaia Gerber. The psychological thriller will arrive in select theaters and on digital platforms on October 3, 2025.
A Sequel on the Horizon
Fifteen years later, the story of Facebook is far from finished. Sorkin is set to return with a sequel that will feature Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. The follow-up aims to capture the platform’s evolution and controversies in the years since the original film.
With its legacy secure and a sequel in the works, The Social Network remains a sharp, stylish portrait of ambition, innovation, and betrayal—one that continues to resonate in today’s world.
