Optimus Prime’s Most Heartbreaking Moment Returns as The Transformers: The Movie Hits Theaters in 4K for 40th Anniversary

The Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary release brings 1986 classic back to the big screen.

Some movie moments do not just live in pop culture. They leave a mark like 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie.

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing The Transformers: The Movie back to theaters for its 40th anniversary, giving fans another chance to experience the beloved 1986 animated classic on the big screen. The special nationwide 4K theatrical release begins Sept. 17, 2026, in honor of Transformers Day, and runs through Sept. 21.

The limited engagement will roll out across the U.S. through Fathom Entertainment.

For longtime fans, this is more than a nostalgia screening. It is a return to one of the most emotional and debated chapters in Transformers history. The death of Optimus Prime remains one of the franchise’s defining moments, and four decades later, fans still talk about the impact it had on a generation.

The Transformers: The Movie returns during Hasbro’s “Apology Tour”

The anniversary release arrives as part of Hasbro’s year-long “Apology Tour,” which leans into the emotional legacy of Optimus Prime’s death. The campaign gives fans a chance to grieve, laugh, reminisce, and celebrate together through special events tied to the film’s lasting impact.

“For decades, Transformers fans have carried this film with them, which is a testament to its storytelling and lasting cultural impact,” said Alyse D’Antuono, vice president, global brand and franchise strategy, action brands, Hasbro. “Bringing it back to theaters is an opportunity for longtime fans to relive it together, and for new audiences to experience a defining chapter of Transformers history.”

That shared experience sits at the center of the theatrical return. Many fans first saw the movie at home, on VHS, cable, or later formats. Now, the 40th anniversary release gives audiences the chance to see the film in 4K with a crowd that knows exactly what is coming.

And yes, it still hurts.

Why The Transformers: The Movie still matters 40 years later

Originally released in 1986, The Transformers: The Movie marked the franchise’s first feature film and took the animated universe in a bold new direction. What began as another explosive battle between Autobots and Decepticons quickly became a darker, bigger, and more emotional story than many young fans expected.

The film introduced major pieces of Transformers mythology, including the Autobot Matrix of Leadership and Unicron, the planet-devouring threat voiced by Orson Welles. It also pushed the franchise forward by making room for new heroes, including Hot Rod, who would eventually become Rodimus Prime.

However, the film’s most unforgettable moment remains Optimus Prime’s fall after his brutal showdown with Megatron. For many fans, it was their first experience watching a hero die on-screen. That moment helped turn The Transformers: The Movie from a toy-driven animated feature into a generational pop culture memory.

Four decades later, the film’s reputation has only grown. Its action, music, voice cast, and emotional stakes helped make it one of the most talked-about animated films of the 1980s.

Fathom Entertainment celebrates the movie’s lasting legacy

Fathom Entertainment, which specializes in theatrical events and limited-run cinema experiences, is partnering with Hasbro for the anniversary release.

“Few films have had a stronger and more lasting legacy than The Transformers: The Movie,” said Ray Nutt, chief executive officer for Fathom Entertainment. “Even 40 years later, this animated feature film remains a defining moment for fans across generations. Fathom is thrilled to team up with Hasbro to give audiences the opportunity to experience The Transformers: The Movie together in 4K on the big screen.”

The big-screen return gives fans a chance to experience the film’s scope in a way that home viewing cannot fully capture. From the opening attack to the arrival of Unicron, The Transformers: The Movie was built with a massive sense of scale, operatic danger, and full-throttle 1980s energy.

The Transformers: The Movie voice cast remains legendary

Part of the film’s lasting appeal comes from its unforgettable voice cast.

Peter Cullen stars as Optimus Prime, with Frank Welker as Megatron. The cast also includes Orson Welles as Unicron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar, and Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus.

That lineup helped give the film a larger-than-life quality. It also turned several characters into lifelong favorites for Transformers fans.

For a franchise built on toys, animation, comics, movies, and constant reinvention, The Transformers: The Movie remains one of its biggest turning points. It changed the status quo, shocked fans, and proved that animated storytelling could carry real emotional weight.

When tickets go on sale for The Transformers: The Movie 40th anniversary release

Tickets for The Transformers: The Movie 40th anniversary theatrical release will be available later this summer through Fathom Entertainment and participating theater box offices. Theater locations are subject to change.

Fans can also expect more anniversary surprises across toys, merchandise, publishing, and other Transformers releases as Hasbro celebrates the movie’s milestone year.

The Transformers brand has remained a global powerhouse since 1984, when the battle between Autobots and Decepticons first came to life. Across toys, TV shows, movies, comic books, games, and digital media, the franchise has continued to deliver “More Than Meets the Eye” storytelling for generations of fans.

Now, The Transformers: The Movie is heading back where moments like this belong.

On the big screen.

Even if fans know exactly what is coming.

And even if it still hits like a truck.
