Toy Story 2 is Pixar’s most groundbreaking sequel.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Toy Story 2, the beloved Pixar sequel that elevated animated storytelling. The film was released on November 24, 1999. It reunited audiences with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of Andy’s toybox. They embarked on an adventurous tale of friendship and belonging.
Directed by John Lasseter, Toy Story 2 follows Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), who is stolen by greedy toy collector Al McWhiggin (Wayne Knight). Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) leads a daring rescue mission, joined by returning favorites like Rex (Wallace Shawn), Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), and Slinky Dog (Jim Varney). The film also introduced memorable new characters, including Jessie the Cowgirl (Joan Cusack), Zurg (Andrew Stanton) and Stinky Pete the Prospector (Kelsey Grammer).
This sequel was initially planned as a direct-to-video release.
After Pixar’s growing success, the project was upgraded to a theatrical release. The result was extraordinary, with Toy Story 2 earning $497 million worldwide and becoming a staple of animated cinema.
The movie is packed with iconic scenes. One memorable moment is Jessie’s tearful backstory set to Sarah McLachlan’s “When She Loved Me.” Another is the hilarious “Cleaner” montage featuring meticulous restoration of Woody. Pixar also sprinkled Easter eggs throughout, including a nod to A Bug’s Life during the “outtakes” sequence and cameos from the Toy Story Pizza Planet truck.
Beyond the laughs and thrills, Toy Story 2 delves into themes of purpose and loyalty. Woody’s struggle to decide between life in a museum and returning to Andy speaks to the heart of what makes toys—and people—special.
The success of the sequel paved the way for an expanding franchise.
In 2010, Toy Story 3 captivated audiences. It emotionally explored the theme of growing up. Andy passed his beloved toys to a new owner, Bonnie. Nine years later, Toy Story 4 brought closure to Woody’s journey, introducing new fan-favorite characters like Forky and reuniting Woody with Bo Peep. Both sequels were critical and commercial triumphs, each earning over $1 billion worldwide. In early 2024, Pixar announced a fifth installment. They promised fans another adventure with their cherished toy box friends.
Twenty-five years later, Toy Story 2 continues to inspire generations with its groundbreaking animation, heartfelt storytelling, and unforgettable characters. It remains a shining example of Pixar’s mastery in blending humor and emotion, proving that toys have a timeless place in our hearts.
