Kevin Smith’s Tusk is a unique blend of horror and comedy.

Ten years ago, on this very day, Tusk, a bold and bizarre blend of horror and comedy, hit theaters. It would go on to make waves with its surreal premise and dark humor. Written and directed by Kevin Smith, the film follows Wallace Bryton, a podcaster portrayed by Justin Long, who finds himself in a grotesque nightmare after traveling to remote Manitoba, Canada, for an interview that quickly takes a sinister turn.

The story kicks off when Wallace, host of the Not-See Party podcast, stumbles upon a mysterious ad while seeking unique stories to feature on his show. The ad leads him to Howard Howe (Michael Parks), a reclusive old man with wild tales of his time stranded at sea with a walrus. Fascinated at first, Wallace is lured into Howard’s home, only to realize too late that the old man has far darker intentions. Obsessed with recreating his lost walrus companion, Howard abducts Wallace and begins a horrific transformation, surgically altering him into a human-walrus hybrid. This transformation is central to the bizarre tale of Tusk.
Smith’s twisted tale is not just a horror film, but a commentary on humanity’s capacity for cruelty and the absurdity of podcast culture. The film is layered with unsettling visuals. It includes the unforgettable scene where Wallace, now grotesquely transformed into a walrus, is forced to behave like the animal while Howard looks on in gleeful satisfaction. It’s a chilling reminder of how far Tusk goes in blending the macabre with dark humor.
The movie has an awesome cast.
Michael Parks gives a terrifying performance as the deranged Howard Howe. Justin Long’s change from a cocky podcaster to a helpless victim is both tragic and horrifying. Genesis Rodriguez plays Ally, Wallace’s concerned girlfriend, and Haley Joel Osment stars as his best friend Teddy. Both characters go on a desperate search for Wallace. This leads to an encounter with Guy Lapointe, a quirky private detective played by Johnny Depp. Depp’s cameo adds a quirky layer to the film’s oddball nature, making Tusk a fan-favorite moment.
Tarantino’s Missed Cameo: What Could Have Been?
Kevin Smith wanted Quentin Tarantino to do a cameo, but he said no. So Depp ended up stealing the show with his quirky performance. The movie quickly became a hit for its unique mix of horror, absurdity, and Kevin Smith’s distinctive dialogue-driven style. Even ten years later, Tusk is still a standout in Kevin Smith’s work. It shows he’s not afraid to push boundaries and get into the weird stuff. For fans of horror and quirky comedy, Tusk still leaves a lasting impression. Catch Smith’s latest film The 4:30 Movie now in theaters.
