Twisters Brings Storm-Chasing Excitement Back to the Big Screen – Movie Review

“Twisters” is a fun but flawed sequel to the 1996 classic.

“Twisters” is one heck of a ride! With Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos leading the way, this adrenaline-pumping adventure is a blast from start to finish. The storm-chasing scenes are spectacular, although they don’t quite capture the same magic as those in the original 1996 film, “Twister.”

The new movie from director Lee Isaac Chung is supposed to continue the story of the classic we all love. Still, it totally misses the mark, with barely any references and mild Easter Eggs from the original. It’s like the first film never happened, which is a real bummer. Helen Hunt, who was working on a sequel and wanted to direct it, could have given us a proper follow-up.

The story follows Kate Carter, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones.

She is a former storm chaser now safely studying storm patterns in New York City after a traumatic encounter with a tornado during her college years. Her friend Javi (Ramos) draws her back to the plains to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. Here, she meets Tyler Owens (Powell), a charming and reckless social media star who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures. As storm season intensifies, unprecedented phenomena are unleashed. Kate, Tyler, Javi, and their teams find themselves in a life-and-death struggle against converging storm systems over central Oklahoma.

Even though the action scenes in “Twisters” are really cool, they look so natural and put you right in the middle of all the chaos. I get that they can’t film actual tornadoes ’cause they’re too dangerous, but the CGI in some parts could be better, which takes away from the whole experience. As an auto enthusiast, I loved how they featured Dodge vehicles. Glen Powell’s old-school Mad Max truck was tons of fun, and Anthony Ramos’s TRX made a great storm chaser, as I have reviewed that truck several times. But I think the movie needed to have a faster pace and have more at stake. It had some slow parts that killed the momentum and needed more intense moments to build up the tension.

Given the title, I expected “Twisters” to feature more tornado adventures. While there are a few encounters, I had hoped for a doomsday scenario similar to “The Day After Tomorrow.” However, I enjoyed the chemistry among the cast and look forward to seeing more from the main trio in future projects. Additionally, David Corenswet, who is set to play Superman in the future, really impresses in his role, showing why he was chosen for the iconic superhero.

Verdict

I give “Twisters” 3.5 out of 5 stars. It brings an adrenaline-pumping thrill ride to the big screen, placing you in direct contact with one of nature’s most destructive forces. It’s a solid disaster movie with much to offer, even if it doesn’t fully live up to its predecessor.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
