Veil of the Damned Turns Mexican Legend Into Horror

Houston filmmaker Damir Catic and Dark Lightning Films are bringing the chilling legend of La Pascualita to the screen.

Houston’s independent film scene is preparing to unleash a new supernatural nightmare. Dark Lightning Films has announced the upcoming horror production Veil of the Damned. Writer and director Damir Catic leads the Houston-based production, which is expected to debut in 2027. The film draws inspiration from Mexico’s infamous mannequin bride legend.

The story centers on an antique collector living in a small Texas border town. His life changes after receiving a mysterious shipment from Mexico. Inside an old wooden crate sits an eerily lifelike mannequin bride. The figure resembles La Pascualita, the legendary bridal mannequin associated with Chihuahua, Mexico.

Once darkness falls, the supernatural activity begins. Whispers emerge from the shadows while strange figures appear and disappear. Eventually, the mysterious bride awakens with glassy and vengeful eyes. Ancient curses and restless spirits soon turn the discovery into something far more dangerous.

Damir Catic Continues Championing Houston Cinema

For many Houston moviegoers, Catic is already a familiar and beloved presence within the local film community.

Catic is closely connected with Houston Film Enthusiasts and serves as the manager of Regal MarqE. He has spent years championing the theatrical experience and supporting Houston’s passionate moviegoing community.

That dedication has also extended to local filmmakers, film critics, and other cinema advocates. The Houston Film Critics Society honored Catic for outstanding cinematic contribution in 2018.

The recognition celebrated his long-standing support for Houston’s filmmakers, critics and film enthusiasts. Catic has also helped bring special movie events and horror programming to local audiences.

His history as a filmmaker stretches beyond his work inside movie theaters. Catic previously directed Her Cry: La Llorona Investigation, another Houston-made horror project rooted in Mexican folklore. The film was later reworked and released as The La Llorona Curse.

Veil of the Damned gives Catic another opportunity to blend those interests. The project combines supernatural folklore, independent filmmaking, and Houston talent. It also represents another local production created by people who genuinely care about the cinematic experience.

I have already seen an early glimpse of what Damir Catic is putting together with Veil of the Damned. What I have seen is fantastic, eerie and immediately atmospheric.

There is a real sense of unease running through the footage. The imagery feels unsettling without revealing too much about what is coming.

Damir has always been a huge champion of movies and the theatrical experience here in Houston. Seeing him bring that same passion into his own production makes this one especially exciting to support.

Veil of the Damned already feels like a project made by someone who understands what horror audiences want. I am very excited to see how the finished film comes together.

Veil of the Damned Cast Features Houston Talent

Principal photography began in October 2025 with award-winning cinematographer Michael Allmon behind the camera.

Rachel Whaley, Drew Shotwell, Ron Gelner, Belen Barron and Alex Segovia lead the ensemble cast. Most additional story details remain under wraps.

Dark Lightning Films produces the project. Damir Catic, Mark Smith and Eric Marglous serve as executive producers. The Houston-based company specializes in horror stories that combine local filmmaking talent with international legends. That approach makes Veil of the Damned an especially fitting project for the company.
