X-Men Origins: Wolverine Revisted On 15th Anniversary

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the gateway to the Deadpool films.

In 2009, the Marvel cinematic universe was forever changed with the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This film, helmed by Gavin Hood, delves into the origin story of one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, Wolverine, brought to life by the incomparable Hugh Jackman. Serving as the fourth installment in the X-Men film series and a prequel to the earlier trilogy, ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ is a deep dive into Wolverine’s early life, his intricate bond with his half-brother Sabretooth (played by Liev Schreiber), and his transformation into the adamantium-clawed hero we all know and love.

He would make his first live-action appearance as Wade Wilson (later to become Deadpool). Joining him were Dominic Monaghan, Taylor Kitsch, and Lynn Collins. This film marks the introduction of Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool. This character would later become a fan-favorite in his standalone films and will team up with Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine this Summer. Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine spans an impressive 24 years, beginning with 2000’s “X-Men” and concluding with 2017’s “Logan.” Over this period, Jackman brought a remarkable depth to the character, making Wolverine synonymous with his name.

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ takes audiences on a thrilling journey through Wolverine’s past, unveiling pivotal events that shape his destiny. From his days as a mutant experiment in the Weapon X program to his fierce battles with Sabretooth, the film explores Wolverine’s origins. Despite receiving mixed reviews, ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was a commercial triumph, grossing a staggering $373 million worldwide. Its success paved the way for future films in the X-Men series. It included the prequel ‘X-Men: First Class’ released in 2011. In 2013, we were treated to The Wolverine by James Mangold.

Despite having tons of flaws, it’s clear that the film holds a significant place in the evolution of superhero cinema. It expanded the X-Men universe and gave fans a deeper understanding of Wolverine’s complex character. Although Hugh Jackman bid farewell to the role of Wolverine in 2017, he is now set to return for one more go around in the third Deadpool film. As we celebrate this milestone, let’s revisit the origins of Wolverine and appreciate the impact this film had on shaping the cinematic superhero landscape we know today.
