Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Ignites Netflix’s Man on Fire as John Creasy Returns to the Screen

Netflix revives Man on Fire with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy.

Netflix has revealed the official teaser and first-look images for Man on Fire, a gripping new action drama starring Wonder Man’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as legendary mercenary John Creasy.

The seven-episode series premieres globally on April 30, 2026, bringing a fresh adaptation of the iconic thriller based on A.J. Quinnell’s bestselling novel series.

Abdul-Mateen leads a strong ensemble cast that includes Billie Boullet, Bobby Cannavale, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, and Paul Ben-Victor. The series follows a broken soldier searching for redemption while confronting the violence he once embraced.

Packed with emotional depth and explosive action, Man on Fire aims to reintroduce the legendary character of John Creasy to a new generation of viewers.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Steps Into the Role of John Creasy

At the center of the series is John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary who once thrived in the most dangerous corners of the world.

However, the years of combat and violence have taken a devastating toll. Creasy now lives with severe PTSD and struggles to find peace after leaving his life as a hired protector.

Determined to confront his past and start over, Creasy attempts to rebuild his life. That fragile hope quickly collapses when a devastating tragedy pulls him back into a world of danger and revenge.

Abdul-Mateen brings considerable credibility to the role. The Emmy-winning actor earned global recognition for his performance in Watchmen and later delivered memorable turns in films like Ambulance, Candyman, Aquaman, and The Matrix Resurrections.

Writer and showrunner Kyle Killen explained why Abdul-Mateen was the perfect actor to embody the complex character.

“He can do everything,” Killen said. “That’s what John Creasy needs. He can be incredibly powerful, and still communicates a lot without saying anything. He’s obviously incredible at action, but he’s also very adept at just revealing those little places where he lets you in.”

Action, Trauma, and Redemption Drive the Story

While Man on Fire promises intense action, the emotional heart of the story lies in Creasy’s struggle to reconnect with humanity.

The series focuses on the complicated bond between Creasy and the people he protects. That relationship becomes a crucial part of his journey toward redemption.

“It’s that relationship between a man and the person he’s supposed to protect, and the way that really draws out the person he’s trying to hide,” Killen said.

“In some ways, he’s very comfortable with the violence and the danger. Those are areas that he understands. It’s opening himself up to other people that makes him really vulnerable.”

That emotional dynamic is highlighted through Poe, played by Billie Boullet. Poe becomes the only witness to a tragic event that Creasy investigates throughout the series.

Their connection forms the emotional backbone of the story as Creasy fights not only enemies but also the ghosts of his past.

The Teaser Reveals a Brutal and Emotional World

The first teaser offers a powerful look at the dual nature of Creasy’s character.

Viewers see the hardened warrior assembling a firearm blindfolded, engaging in brutal gunfights and fistfights, and detonating charges inside a prison cell block.

Yet the teaser also reveals the quieter side of the character. Creasy comforts Poe as she processes the trauma of the tragedy they both face.

This contrast between violence and vulnerability defines the tone of the series. It shows a man who understands war better than peace but is determined to change.

A Story With a Long Legacy on Screen

The character of John Creasy has captivated audiences for decades, beginning with A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel Man on Fire. The book introduced the battle-scarred mercenary who becomes a bodyguard and protector, a story that later expanded into several sequels.

The novel was first adapted into a film in 1987, starring Scott Glenn as Creasy. While that version earned a cult following, it remained relatively under the radar compared with later adaptations.

The story reached global recognition with the 2004 film directed by Tony Scott, starring Denzel Washington as Creasy and Dakota Fanning as the young girl he protects. That film became a modern action classic, praised for its emotional storytelling and brutal revenge narrative.

Netflix’s new series is not a remake of the Denzel Washington film. Instead, it returns to the A.J. Quinnell book series and expands the story into a longer narrative format.

With seven episodes, the series has room to explore Creasy’s past, trauma, and personal journey in greater depth than previous adaptations and with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stepping into the role, Man on Fire is poised to introduce one of action fiction’s most iconic antiheroes to a new generation.

Man on Fire premieres globally on Netflix on April 30, 2026.
