“A Goofy Movie” Celebrates 30 Years of Heart, Humor, and Legacy

How Disney’s underdog “A Goofy Movie” became a beloved cult classic.

It’s been 30 years since A Goofy Movie first hit theaters on April 7, 1995. While it didn’t make a huge splash at the box office then, this animated coming-of-age tale has since cemented itself as a nostalgic favorite for ‘90s kids and Disney fans alike.

Directed by Kevin Lima, A Goofy Movie follows Goofy and his teenage son Max on a cross-country road trip that tests their father-son bond. Max, desperate to impress his crush Roxanne, tries to ditch the family trip to see pop star Powerline in concert. But along the way, the journey turns into something much deeper: a heartfelt adventure about understanding, growing up, and making room for both love and goofiness.

The film was voiced by a talented cast.

It includes Bill Farmer as Goofy, Jason Marsden as Max, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Wallace Shawn, and Pauly Shore. Tevin Campbell’s unforgettable vocals as Powerline added major star power to the soundtrack, especially with hits like “Eye to Eye” and “Stand Out,” which are still fan favorites.

Despite its modest release and limited marketing compared to other Disney features at the time, A Goofy Movie struck a chord with viewers who related to its emotional story, relatable characters, and catchy soundtrack.

Over the years, its popularity has grown, leading to packed screenings, cosplay, and endless quotes across the internet. Scenes like the perfect cast fishing moment, the musical numbers, and the wild trip to Lester’s Possum Park live rent-free in many fans’ heads.

Behind-the-scenes documentary.

To mark its 30th anniversary, Disney has released a new documentary titled Not Just a Goof. This eye-opening retrospective explores the making of A Goofy Movie through key interviews and rare behind-the-scenes footage.

It highlights how a young, ambitious creative team worked hard on their first Disney feature, only to face disappointment when the film didn’t receive the recognition it deserved upon release. Over time, though, the film’s legacy blossomed, thanks to a passionate fan base and growing cultural appreciation.

Not Just a Goof goes beyond telling the story of the movie’s production. It offers a deeper look at Disney Animation’s evolution in the ‘90s and why this film has stood the test of time. The documentary celebrates not just the film itself but the people who believed in it—both on screen and behind the scenes.

Three decades later, A Goofy Movie is no longer just an underrated gem. It’s a cherished piece of animation history that continues to connect with new generations. And if you’re not already singing “After Today” by now… you probably will be by the end of the day.

For fans old and new, it’s the perfect time to revisit the road trip that proved Goofy’s heart was always in the right place—and Max’s was too.
