Airplane! Turns 45: The Beloved Parody That Still Soars

Airplane! is the parody that redefined disaster films.

This summer marks the 45th anniversary of Airplane!, the side-splitting disaster film parody that forever changed comedy. Released in 1980 and alternatively titled Flying High! in some countries, the film was written and directed by brothers David and Jerry Zucker along with Jim Abrahams. The movie hilariously spoofs the 1957 film Zero Hour!, borrowing its plot and characters while inverting every trope.

At the heart of Airplane! is Ted Striker, a nervous ex-fighter pilot with a crippling fear of flying, played by Robert Hays. When food poisoning incapacitates both the pilots and many passengers on board, it’s up to Striker—urged on by his ex-girlfriend and flight attendant Elaine Dickinson, played by Julie Hagerty—to overcome his fears and safely land the plane.

The ensemble cast is stacked.

It features comedic icons and some straight-faced legends delivering outrageous lines with perfect deadpan. Leslie Nielsen’s turn as Dr. Rumack is iconic, with his immortal line, “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.” Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar round out the cast, each contributing to the film’s endless barrage of visual gags and quotable one-liners.

Memorable scenes include the dancing flashback, the autopilot “Otto” inflating and deflating, and the countless sight gags that reward repeat viewings. The Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team’s relentless joke-a-minute style paved the way for countless spoof movies that followed, though few ever matched Airplane!’s pitch-perfect absurdity.

Airplane! was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It also earned the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy. Four and a half decades later, it remains a fan favorite, consistently ranking among the funniest films ever made.

So here’s to 45 years of turbulence, slapstick, and a comedy classic that still knows how to land a joke—every single time.
