Sacha Baron Cohen brings back his outrageous comedy character for a new American adventure, with Borat Sagdiyev joining the promotional chaos ahead of a limited theatrical release.

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing Ali G back to theaters, and another one of his famous characters is getting involved in the comeback.
Amazon MGM Studios is preparing to release ALI G: WHO IZ I?, a new comedy that reunites audiences with Cohen’s outrageous, tracksuit-wearing character more than two decades after his last starring movie. The upcoming film also marks Cohen’s feature directorial debut, with Morgana Robinson joining him in the cast.
The latest promotional push comes with a familiar face from Cohen’s comedy universe. Borat Sagdiyev, the fictional Kazakh journalist who became an international sensation through his own movies, is taking aim at Ali G’s return in a comedic announcement presented through his role as a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Information.
Both characters originated from Cohen’s groundbreaking television comedy, making the promotional crossover a reunion between two of his most recognizable creations.
ALI G: WHO IZ I? opens in theaters October 23 for one weekend only.
Ali G Returns to America in New Movie Trailer
Ali G has spent the past 20 years doing exactly what fans would expect from him: avoiding responsibility and enjoying life on his own terms.
His comfortable existence comes crashing down when he discovers that his longtime girlfriend, Julie, is eight months pregnant.
The news forces Ali to confront a reality he never planned for. With a baby on the way and another mouth to feed, he decides to leave his familiar surroundings behind and travel to America in hopes of reclaiming his former fame.
However, his attempted comeback soon takes a dangerous turn.
Ali encounters adversaries who threaten both his existence and the future of his unborn child. His ridiculous quest for success quickly becomes something far more complicated than an ordinary trip overseas.
The trailer brings back the character’s trademark oversized outfits, questionable judgment, and complete lack of self-awareness. Cohen also returns to the awkward encounters and unpredictable interactions that helped establish Ali G as a comedy favorite.
Rather than relying entirely on a traditional scripted storyline, the film incorporates documentary-style humor reminiscent of Cohen’s previous work.
The American setting also provides an opportunity for Ali G to confront a society dramatically different from the one he last explored more than two decades ago.
Borat Sagdiyev Slams Ali G’s Comeback
Cohen is also using another familiar character to promote the film.
Borat Sagdiyev has entered the conversation through a satirical announcement identifying him as a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Information.
The fictional journalist’s criticism of Ali G adds another layer of comedy to the film’s marketing campaign, bringing together characters who originally shared the spotlight on Da Ali G Show.
Borat became a worldwide phenomenon with the 2006 mockumentary Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Cohen later returned to the role for the 2020 sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which was released through Amazon.
His involvement in the promotion creates a fun connection between Cohen’s earlier television work and his latest theatrical project.
While Borat’s appearance has been highlighted in the promotional material, his participation in the actual movie has not been confirmed.
Sacha Baron Cohen Makes His Feature Directorial Debut
Although Cohen has spent decades creating and portraying some of comedy’s most recognizable characters, ALI G: WHO IZ I? marks a major milestone in his filmmaking career.
For the first time, Cohen is directing a feature film himself.
His previous character-driven movies were directed by other filmmakers, including Mark Mylod on Ali G Indahouse and Larry Charles on Borat and Brüno.
Cohen’s comedy has frequently relied on elaborate disguises, provocative interviews and interactions with people who may not realize they are participating in a fictional scenario.
The first trailer for ALI G: WHO IZ I? suggests the filmmaker is returning to those techniques while introducing Ali G to modern American culture.
Morgana Robinson portrays Julie, Ali G’s longtime girlfriend, whose unexpected pregnancy launches the character’s latest adventure.
Cohen also serves as the film’s writer and producer, placing him at the center of the production both in front of and behind the camera.
Ali G Returns More Than Two Decades After Indahouse
Ali G first appeared on British television in 1998 through The 11 O’Clock Show, where Cohen introduced audiences to the fictional wannabe gangster from Staines.
The character’s popularity eventually led to Da Ali G Show, which premiered in the United Kingdom in 2000 before expanding to American television through HBO.
Cohen used Ali G’s exaggerated personality to interview politicians, celebrities and public figures, often asking absurd questions while maintaining a completely serious expression.
The character made his theatrical debut in Ali G Indahouse in 2002.
Unlike the documentary-style approach of Cohen’s later films, Indahouse followed a more traditional fictional storyline involving Ali’s unlikely rise into British politics.
The new movie brings Ali G back to the United States and appears to combine his original interview format with the mockumentary techniques Cohen developed through Borat and Brüno.
His comeback also arrives in a different comedy landscape, where viral videos, social media personalities and online controversies have transformed how audiences experience satire.
Ali G’s complete misunderstanding of the world around him remains central to the character, even as the world itself continues to change.
ALI G: WHO IZ I?, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Morgana Robinson, opens in theaters October 23, 2026, for one weekend.
