Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight is a hilarious, heartfelt return to Gaul.

As a lifelong fan of Asterix & Obelix who grew up flipping through comic pages of their adventures alongside Tintin, discovering Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight was an absolute joy. I’d devour every volume when my family visited Belgium or sent books back. Those same comics sit proudly on my shelf today—recently joined by a few nostalgic gifts that rekindled my love for the clever Gaulish duo. So when this new animated miniseries dropped, I was beyond excited, and I’m happy to report that it absolutely delivers.

Streaming now, The Big Fight is a gorgeously animated, smartly written, and surprisingly emotional adaptation of The Battle of the Chieftains, René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s seventh Asterix comic. Created by Alain Chabat (Mission Cleopatra) and co-directed by Fabrice Joubert, this series captures everything that makes the original comics timeless while introducing a new generation to the magic of Asterix.
Set in 50 BC.
The series sees the usual setup: the Roman Empire has conquered all of Gaul—except for one small village, thanks to their magic potion brewed by Getafix. But when Getafix loses his memory (and the potion recipe), it’s up to Asterix, Obelix, and their fellow villagers to hold their ground.

The heart of the show lies in its pitch-perfect tone. It’s both nostalgic and fresh. The series is packed with clever pop culture nods, sharp humor, and a genuine love for the source material. All the music, writing, and voice acting are stellar across the board—especially in the French original, which I watched first and adored. I ended up watching the series three times—once in French and twice more with the excellent English dub.
Seeing younger versions of Asterix and Obelix was adorable. Their dynamic is just as endearing, if not more so, and I hope we get more episodes featuring this era. The animation is top-tier, colorful, expressive, and loaded with charm. It felt like the comic strips I grew up on had come to life in the best way possible.
Verdict
I give Asterix & Obelix: The Big 5 out of 5 stars. It is a must-watch for fans and newcomers alike. It’s funny, heartfelt, and packed with adventure—everything you’d want from an Asterix & Obelix series.
