Marvel’s theatrical reissue returned to No. 1 and pushed the film’s lifetime global total past $2.88 billion.
Seven years after its original release, Avengers: Endgame is back at the top of the box office.
Avengers: Endgame Encore earned an estimated $26 million from 3,060 North American theaters over the weekend. The reissue added approximately $60 million overseas, bringing its worldwide weekend haul to an estimated $86 million.
The new ticket sales have raised Endgame’s lifetime total to approximately $884 million domestically and $2.885 billion worldwide. Those figures remain estimates until final weekend grosses are reported.
Marvel Leads a Crowded Weekend
Endgame Encore took the No. 1 spot ahead of several recent releases. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil earned an estimated $23.3 million in its second weekend, while Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast debuted with $20 million. Robert Pattinson’s Primetime followed closely with about $19.2 million.
The reissue drew audiences despite the film having been available to watch outside theaters for years. Marvel gave fans a new reason to return: Endgame Encore includes an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. Screenings in IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified theaters offer an additional sneak peek.
Its $26 million domestic weekend fell short of the roughly $30 million earned by the 2011 3D reissue of The Lion King. Still, the result put a seven-year-old movie ahead of every new release and holdover on the chart.
Endgame Closes the Gap With Avatar
The weekend also renewed a familiar box office race. With approximately $2.885 billion worldwide, Endgame now sits about $38 million behind James Cameron’s Avatar, whose lifetime total is approximately $2.924 billion.
Endgame briefly held the worldwide box office record after its original run before an Avatar reissue reclaimed it. The new Marvel release has narrowed that gap, though its opening weekend alone did not put it back in first place.
For Marvel, the timing serves another purpose. Anthony and Joe Russo directed Endgame and return for Doomsday, which brings Robert Downey Jr. back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. The theatrical reissue lets audiences revisit the conclusion of the Infinity Saga while seeing an early glimpse of the next Avengers movie.
