Background On The Descendants Franchise
Disney’s Descendants franchise launched in 2015 with the first Disney Channel Original Movie, which introduced a new generation of characters connected to classic Disney heroes and villains.
The original movie followed Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos, the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella de Vil, as they left the Isle of the Lost and entered Auradon. The story centered on whether the children of famous villains would follow in their parents’ footsteps or choose their own path.
The franchise continued with Descendants 2 in 2017 and Descendants 3 in 2019, expanding the world of Auradon and the Isle of the Lost while adding new characters tied to Disney’s animated legacy.
In 2024, Disney continued the franchise with Descendants: The Rise of Red, which introduced Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, the daughter of Cinderella. The movie moved the story into Wonderland and used time travel to explore how the past shaped the next generation of Disney characters.
Descendants: Wicked Wonderland now continues that storyline, bringing the franchise further into Wonderland with new characters, including Awkwafina as Chessy the Cat.
