Beetlejuice Revisited Three Decades Later

Beetlejuice is set to haunt theaters again 36 years later.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the original release of “Beetlejuice.” The timeless comedic fantasy directed by the singular creative visionary Tim Burton. Released on March 29, 1988, this cult classic continues to enchant audiences with its macabre charm and offbeat humor. The film tells the story of a recently deceased couple, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who enlists the help of a mischievous ghost, Beetlejuice, portrayed by the incomparable Michael Keaton. Their aim? To rid their beloved home of an obnoxious family who have moved in after their demise.

The film’s unique blend of dark humor, whimsical visuals, and memorable characters captivated audiences.

From the quirky antics of Beetlejuice himself to the gothic aesthetics of the afterlife, the film’s imaginative world-building earned it critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. The cast of “Beetlejuice” also included iconic performances from Winona Ryder as the angsty teenager Lydia Deetz, Catherine O’Hara as the eccentric Delia Deetz, and Jeffrey Jones as the clueless patriarch Charles Deetz. Together, they brought Burton’s twisted vision to life with unforgettable flair. Box office success accompanied critical acclaim, with “Beetlejuice” grossing over $73 million domestically and earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup. Its impact on pop culture continues, inspiring countless adaptations, merchandise, and even a Broadway musical.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Fans of the original film have reason to rejoice, as a long-awaited sequel is set to hit theaters later this year. Titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the film sees Burton and Keaton reuniting again for another round of supernatural shenanigans. Joining Keaton in reprising their roles are Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, alongside a talented ensemble cast including Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.

In “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” audiences will be treated to a new chapter in the Deetz family saga. Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife, leading to chaos in both realms. With Beetlejuice on the loose once more, hilarity and mayhem will follow. Everyone is looking forward to the sequel’s release on September 4th. After all, who wouldn’t want to say Beetlejuice’s name three times and invite a little mischief into their lives?
