Summer Movie Season 2026 Preview: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Supergirl, The Odyssey And More Must-See Movies

Summer Movie Season 2026 is loaded with big-screen entertainment.

Summer movie season is back, and theaters are getting ready for superheroes, animation, nostalgia, sci-fi, horror, action, music, comedy, and major franchise returns.

The 2026 lineup has something for every kind of moviegoer. Families have Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters. Comic book fans have Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Filmmaker-driven movie lovers have Steven Spielberg returning to science fiction with Disclosure Day and Christopher Nolan taking on The Odyssey. Meanwhile, Scary Movie brings back horror parody, Power Ballad offers a music-driven comedy, Masters of the Universe reopens the gates to Eternia, and The Furious gives action fans a hard-hitting martial arts thriller.

After breaking down my most anticipated summer movies on Hello Houston, this list highlights the theatrical releases that could help define the season. Some are built for families. Some are pure nostalgia plays. Others are massive big-screen events.

The big takeaway is simple: theaters are about to get busy again.

Here are 10 summer 2026 movies worth watching, when they open, who stars in them, and what makes each one exciting.

10. Scary Movie

Scary Movie opens in theaters June 5.

The comedy sequel stars Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Jon Abrahams, Anthony Anderson, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Elliott.

The new film catches up with Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray 26 years after they survived a familiar masked killer. However, their nightmare is not over. A new round of horror movie chaos begins when a mad slasher returns and pulls the group back into another parody-filled bloodbath.

Scary Movie has a clear reason to exist right now. Horror has dominated pop culture for years, from prestige scares and legacy sequels to viral genre hits and franchise revivals. That makes this the right time for the Wayans family and several original stars to return to the franchise that helped turn horror parody into a box office event.

The appeal is nostalgia with timing. Audiences know the horror trends, the tropes and the jump-scare formulas. Scary Movie can turn all of that into comedy again, giving summer a ridiculous, crowd-friendly option for people who want to laugh at the scares instead of hiding from them.

9. Power Ballad

Power Ballad opens in theaters June 5.

The film stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor, Peter McDonald, and Marcella Plunkett. John Carney, the filmmaker behind Once and Sing Street, directs.

The story follows Rick, played by Rudd, a past-his-prime wedding singer whose life changes when he meets Danny, played by Jonas, a fading boy band star. The two connect through music, but things get complicated when a song becomes the center of ambition, betrayal, and creative ownership.

Power Ballad stands out because it offers something different in the middle of a packed blockbuster season. Not every summer movie needs capes, monsters or end-of-the-world stakes. This one brings music, comedy, ego, heartbreak and the messy business of creativity.

Rudd and Jonas make an interesting pairing because they bring two different entertainment worlds together. Carney’s track record with music-driven stories also gives the movie a stronger emotional foundation. For audiences looking for a summer movie with charm instead of destruction, this could be the sleeper pick.

8. Masters Of The Universe

Masters of the Universe opens in theaters June 5.

The live-action film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Jared Leto, James Purefoy, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, and Kristen Wiig as the voice of Roboto.

The movie follows a young man on Earth who discovers he has a secret legacy as the prince of an alien planet. To protect his kingdom, he must recover a powerful magic sword and return home.

Masters of the Universe is one of the summer’s biggest nostalgia plays. He-Man, Skeletor, Castle Grayskull and Eternia still carry major recognition for fans who grew up with the toys and animated series. A live-action return gives the franchise a chance to become a theatrical fantasy adventure again.

The movie also has the potential to reach beyond longtime fans. The idea of a hero discovering his true legacy, returning to an alien kingdom and taking up a legendary sword gives new audiences a clear way into the world. If the film captures the scale and color of Eternia, this could become both a throwback and a fresh start.

7. The Furious

The Furious opens in theaters June 12.

The action thriller stars Xie Miao, Joe Taslim, Yang Enyou, Brian Le, Sahajak Boonthanakit and Joey Iwanaga.

The film follows Wang Wei, a humble tradesman whose daughter, Rainy, is abducted. His search drags him into a violent underworld filled with corruption and danger. His only ally is Navin, a journalist with a haunted past. Together, they fight through an international criminal network to save Rainy and uncover the truth.

The Furious is the hard-hitting action entry summer movie season needs. It has a simple emotional engine with a father searching for his daughter, but the setup opens the door for martial arts, revenge, corruption and relentless momentum.

Joe Taslim immediately gives the movie credibility with action fans. The cast and premise suggest a film built around impact, movement and hand-to-hand intensity. In a season full of superheroes and family movies, The Furious gives adult action fans something sharper, faster and more physical.

6. Disclosure Day

Disclosure Day opens in theaters June 12.

The sci-fi thriller stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell. Steven Spielberg directs, with John Williams scoring another Spielberg theatrical event.

The film follows people trying to expose the truth about alien contact while a shadowy organization pursues them. The UFO conspiracy thriller is also set for a theatrical and IMAX release.

Disclosure Day is one of the most exciting movies on the calendar because Spielberg and science fiction always get attention. Add UFOs, government secrecy, IMAX and a John Williams score, and this has the shape of a true adult summer event movie.

The cast makes it even stronger. Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth and Josh O’Connor give the film dramatic weight, while the conspiracy angle gives audiences a mystery to chase. If the movie delivers on its promise, Disclosure Day could be the kind of sci-fi thriller that turns spectacle, suspense and wonder into a major theatrical draw.

5. Minions & Monsters

Minions & Monsters opens in theaters July 1.

The animated film features Pierre Coffin as the Minions, Trey Parker as Goomi, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Allison Janney, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Christoph Waltz, and Jeff Bridges.

The story follows the Minions in 1920s Hollywood as they chase movie stardom, unleash monsters onto the world, and then try to save the planet from the chaos they created.

This is the family movie heading into the Fourth of July window. Kids already love the Minions, parents know the brand, and the Hollywood monster movie angle gives the franchise a fresh new twist.

The 1920s Hollywood setting also opens the door for a bigger visual playground. Movie stardom, old-school monsters and Minion chaos sound like a smart combination for a family crowd. It is easy to see this becoming one of the season’s biggest animated titles because it gives families a recognizable brand with a new hook.

4. Supergirl

Supergirl opens in theaters June 26.

The DC film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and Supergirl, Jason Momoa as Lobo, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and David Corenswet as Superman.

The movie follows Kara Zor-El after a ruthless enemy strikes too close to home. Her journey becomes an interstellar mission of vengeance and justice, sending her into a larger cosmic adventure.

Supergirl is a major step for the new DC Universe. It gives Kara Zor-El her own theatrical spotlight while expanding the franchise beyond Earth and into a more cosmic corner of DC storytelling.

Milly Alcock gets a huge opportunity to define Supergirl for a new generation, and Jason Momoa as Lobo gives the movie an extra jolt of comic book energy. The film can show audiences that this new DC era is not only about Superman, Gotham or Earthbound heroes. It can also go strange, cosmic and emotionally intense.

3. The Odyssey

The Odyssey opens in theaters July 17.

The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel and Corey Hawkins. Christopher Nolan directs.

Nolan takes on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, with Damon starring as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. After the Trojan War, Odysseus begins a dangerous journey home filled with mythical creatures, deadly obstacles and impossible choices as he tries to reunite with his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus.

The Odyssey is one of the biggest filmmaker-driven events of the summer. Nolan doing a massive IMAX Greek mythology epic with this cast is exactly the kind of movie built for the largest screen possible. It has the scale, the star power and the source material to feel like a true theatrical event instead of just another summer release.

What makes The Odyssey exciting is the combination of mythology and Nolan’s big-screen precision. This is a legendary story about survival, temptation, war, family and the long road home, now being told by one of the few filmmakers whose name alone can turn a theatrical release into a must-see event.

2. Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 opens in theaters June 19.

The Pixar sequel features Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Tony Hale as Forky, Greta Lee as Lilypad, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Craig Robinson as Atlas, Shelby Rabara as Snappy, Bad Bunny as Pizza with Sunglasses, Alan Cumming as Evil Bullseye, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Wallace Shawn as Rex and John Ratzenberger as Hamm.

The story follows Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the toys as they face a very modern threat: electronics. Bonnie is older, and her attention shifts toward a frog-like tablet named Lilypad. The toys must confront what happens when kids start choosing screens over traditional playtime.

Toy Story 5 has one of the strongest emotional hooks of the summer. The franchise has always worked because kids see the adventure while adults feel the nostalgia, growing-up themes and emotional weight.

The screen-time idea gives this sequel a very current reason to exist. Woody, Buzz and Jessie have survived moving trucks, yard sales, daycare and life after Andy. Now, they are facing a world where childhood play competes with tablets and digital distractions. That is funny on the surface, but it also gives Pixar a meaningful theme for families to connect with.

1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters July 31.

The Marvel film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Spider-Man, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle and the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan and Scorpion, and Tramell Tillman.

After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the world no longer remembers Peter Parker. Now alone and fighting crime in New York City, Peter has fully committed himself to being Spider-Man. However, as pressure builds, he faces a powerful new threat and a surprising physical evolution that could put his life at risk.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the movie I expect to drive the loudest conversation this summer. No Way Home ended with Peter Parker losing everything. His friends forgot him. The world forgot him. He walked away from the life he knew and fully stepped into being Spider-Man.

That makes this new chapter feel like the street-level reset fans have been waiting for. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man can finally operate as a true friendly neighborhood hero in New York, with less multiverse chaos and more personal stakes. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher adds a grittier edge, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk brings Marvel scale, and Michael Mando’s Scorpion gives longtime MCU fans a thread they have wanted to see pay off.

This is not just another Spider-Man sequel. It is a chance to rebuild the character from the ground up after the most emotional ending of his MCU story so far.

Summer 2026 Movie Season Has A Movie For Every Kind Of Moviegoer

The 2026 summer movie season has a little bit of everything.

Families get Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters. Comedy fans get Scary Movie and Power Ballad. Action fans get The Furious. Nostalgia fans get Masters of the Universe. DC gets a major cosmic chapter with Supergirl. Spielberg returns to sci-fi with Disclosure Day. Nolan goes full mythological epic with The Odyssey.

However, Spider-Man: Brand New Day may be the movie that drives the loudest conversation. After No Way Home, Peter Parker lost everything. Now, fans finally get to see him become the Spider-Man many have wanted: alone, anonymous, street-level, and fully responsible for the hero he chooses to be.

The summer movie season is officially open for business. Grab the popcorn, check the showtimes, and get ready because theaters are about to be packed.
