Boy Kills World – Movie Review

Boy Kills World features a silent force of nature.

In “Boy Kills World,” viewers are in for a wild ride through a post-apocalyptic landscape dripping with vengeance and adrenaline. Directed by Moritz Mohr in his directorial debut, this film stands tall among action-packed revenge flicks like “Monkey Man” and “John Wick.”

Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of “Boy” is breathtaking. The young man is thrown into a world of injustice and brutality, and Skarsgård’s physical transformation for the role is impressive. He embodies the protagonist, who is silent but deadly, with a combination of intensity and vulnerability. Despite not uttering a single word, Skarsgård commands the screen with his presence, drawing viewers into Boy’s quest for revenge against those who shattered his world. While seemingly straightforward, Mohr masterfully weaves the storyline into a classic revenge tale filled with unexpected twists and turns. From the moment Boy is rescued by a mysterious shaman, played with enigmatic flair by Yayan Ruhian, to his transformation into a lethal killing machine, every moment is a suspenseful and exhilarating surprise.

The supporting cast in the film is excellent and perfectly complements the storyline.

It includes talented actors such as Brett Gelman, Isaiah Mustafa, Yayan Ruhian, Andrew Koji, Sharlto Copley, and Famke Janssen. Each of them adds depth and uniqueness to their characters, contributing to the overall quirkiness of the movie. A notable mention goes to H. Jon Benjamin’s narration as Boy’s voice, paying homage to the character’s origin from a childhood video game. Benjamin’s narration skills are remarkable, making him an absolute pleasure to listen to regardless of the content.

One of the film’s strongest aspects is its action sequences, which are both thrilling and creatively brutal. From hand-to-hand combat to intense martial arts showdowns, each fight scene is expertly choreographed. The action and blood will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Skarsgård’s portrayal of Boy is physically imposing and imbued with a sense of humor, adding a unique dynamic to the character. Despite the grim circumstances, Boy’s interactions with his ghostly sister and the resistance group inject moments of levity into the narrative, providing a much-needed balance to the intense action and allowing viewers to experience a full emotional spectrum. In the end, the film’s pacing overstays its welcome, nearing the 2-hour mark.

Verdict

I give “Boy Kills World” 3.5 out of 5 stars. While it may not reinvent the revenge genre, it delivers on its promise of pulse-pounding excitement and a compelling protagonist. With Mohr’s promising directorial debut and Skarsgård’s performance, this film is sure to leave audiences eager for more. For those who enjoy post-credit scenes, there is one included at the end of the movie.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
