Coven Academy Trailer Conjures Devon Sawa and Tiffani Thiessen

Malina Pauli Weissman leads Freeform’s supernatural teen drama about witches, warlocks and vampires.

The school bell is about to ring at Coven Academy, where witches, warlocks and vampires must survive magical threats, dangerous secrets and complicated relationships. The first teaser for the new supernatural teen drama offers an enchanting look inside an elite New Orleans boarding school where power is currency, secrets can be deadly and falling for the wrong person could become a serious liability.

Created and executive produced by High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, Coven Academy premieres Oct. 1 on Freeform. The complete first season will arrive the following day on Disney+ and Hulu.

Coven Academy Introduces a Dangerous School of Magic

Set in the haunted heart of New Orleans, Coven Academy follows three teenage witches and the dangerously charming warlocks studying alongside them. The students must learn to control their powers as they confront ancient supernatural conflicts threatening their city. However, magic is not the only force creating chaos around the school. Forbidden romances, deadly secrets, and personal rivalries could prove equally dangerous.

At the center of the story is Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she is a witch. Her arrival at the academy opens the door to questions surrounding her mysterious past and her family’s connection to the magical world.

Briar eventually forms a budding coven with Sasha, an empathic student who can read minds, and Tegan, an irreverent witch capable of bending time. Their growing sisterhood will be tested as they uncover secrets tied to the school and the larger supernatural world that hides throughout New Orleans.

The teaser, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “brutal,” highlights the tension developing within the trio. It also teases Briar’s connection with Jake, a magnetic young warlock whose ambition and dangerous desires could place the entire coven at risk. Jake is not Briar’s only potential supernatural love interest. Ollie, a newly turned vampire struggling with his hunger, adds another complication to the academy’s growing web of romance and danger.

The Series Uses a Bingeable Chapter Format

Coven Academy will tell its story through a collection of fast-moving chapters instead of traditional hour-long episodes. The shorter format is designed to keep the mystery moving while encouraging viewers to continue directly into the next chapter.

The first season consists of 21 bite-sized chapters. Freeform will air the series across three weekly blocks, beginning with nine chapters on October 1. Six more will air October 8, followed by the final six on October 15. Viewers who prefer to binge the entire mystery will not have to wait. All 21 chapters will become available on Disney+ and Hulu on Oct. 2.

Federle developed the original series as a love letter to the supernatural teen shows and movies that influenced him. Those inspirations include Charmed, The Craft, Practical Magic, Hocus Pocus and character-driven teen dramas such as Dawson’s Creek.

The series combines those magical influences with modern music, romance and the challenges of growing up. The supernatural abilities of its young characters also reflect the personality traits that once made them feel misunderstood outside the academy.

Who Stars in Coven Academy?

Malina Pauli Weissman, known for Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, stars as Briar. Her character arrives at the academy determined to uncover the truth about her past, even if those answers place her in danger. Malachi Barton, whose credits include Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires and Camp Rock 3, plays Jake. The young warlock possesses a dangerous edge and finds himself drawn toward increasingly dark forms of magic.

Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha, a deeply empathic student who can read minds, while Ora Duplass stars as the time-bending Tegan. Louis Thresher plays Ollie, a newly turned vampire attempting to control his hunger while adjusting to his supernatural transformation.

Tiffani Thiessen stars as Miss Graves, the glamorous and formidable head of the academy. The role brings the Saved by the Bell, Beverly Hills, 90210, and White Collar star back to school in a much more magical position of authority. Final Destination and Chucky star Devon Sawa appears as special guest star Mr. Cole, a brilliant and charismatic warlock professor who takes Jake under his wing.

The recurring cast includes Swayam Bhatia as McKenna, Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora, BJ Harrison as Agnes and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese.

When Does Coven Academy Premiere?

Coven Academy premieres Thursday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT on Freeform. The entire first season will be available Friday, Oct. 2, on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform on Demand.
