Anemone is Daniel Day-Lewis’ first role since Phantom Thread.

Daniel Day-Lewis, widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation, is returning to the screen in Anemone, a drama directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. The film will premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival before opening in theaters on October 3, 2025, in a limited release from Focus Features. It will expand nationwide on October 10.
A Family Affair
Anemone explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons. The film stars Day-Lewis as Ray Stoker, alongside Sean Bean as Jem and Samantha Morton. Rounding out the cast are Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green.
This marks the first film role for Daniel Day-Lewis since his 2017 retirement following Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, which earned him his sixth Academy Award nomination.
Legendary Career
Throughout his career, Day-Lewis has delivered transformative performances in films that have become cornerstones of modern cinema. His most notable roles include:
- My Left Foot (1989), which earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
- There Will Be Blood (2007), where his towering portrayal of oilman Daniel Plainview secured his second Oscar.
- Lincoln (2012), a performance that brought him his third Academy Award, making him the only actor to win three Best Actor Oscars.
- Other acclaimed works include In the Name of the Father (1993), Gangs of New York (2002), and The Last of the Mohicans (1992).
A Highly Anticipated Return
Day-Lewis’ return has already generated significant buzz, both for the actor’s legendary reputation and the father-son collaboration behind the camera. With Focus Features distributing and a prestigious festival premiere, Anemone is poised to be one of the most talked-about films of the year.
Anemone opens exclusively in theaters on October 3, 2025, before expanding nationwide on October 10.
