Disney’s iconic crime fighter returns with a star-studded voice cast, familiar villains and a universe-saving adventure 35 years in the making.
Let’s get dangerous. Disney has officially greenlit an all-new Darkwing Duck animated series for Disney+, bringing the beloved crime fighter back with an impressive voice cast led by Mark Hamill, Seth Rogen and Lizzy Caplan.
The upcoming series marks a major comeback for Drake Mallard, the egotistical superhero who first captured audiences’ imaginations in 1991. This time, the Terror That Flaps in the Night will face his greatest challenge yet as he navigates an unfamiliar reality and returns to battle alongside a new generation of heroes.
Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck, taking over the iconic role originally performed by Jim Cummings. Rogen joins the cast as Darkwing’s loyal sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, while Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard.
Lilimar rounds out the central cast as Duckie, a rebellious teenager who plays a crucial role in bringing the legendary superhero back into action.
The announcement also confirms the return of several familiar characters and villains, including Negaduck, Megavolt, and Morgana.
What Is the New Darkwing Duck Series About?
The upcoming animated series introduces a surprising twist to the superhero’s story.
For the past 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped inside an alternate world where nobody has ever heard of his heroic exploits. For a crime fighter who thrives on attention and recognition, living in a reality where his accomplishments never happened is nothing short of a nightmare.
Everything changes when Duckie, a rebellious teenager who knows all about Darkwing’s past, arrives to pull him back into action.
Together, the unlikely partners must battle dangerous enemies, reunite with familiar allies, and save the entire universe.
Their adventure will bring Darkwing face-to-face with classic villains Negaduck and Megavolt while reconnecting him with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana.
The premise gives the franchise an opportunity to explore what happens when a superhero who desperately wants to be remembered discovers that the world has completely forgotten him.
It also introduces a new dynamic between Darkwing and Duckie, pairing an attention-seeking veteran crime fighter with a younger character who knows the truth about his legacy.
Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen Lead the Star-Studded Voice Cast
Disney has assembled an extensive lineup of talent to bring the new adventures to life.
The confirmed voice cast includes Mark Hamill as Drake Mallard/Darkwing Duck, Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar as Duckie.
Additional cast members include Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
Hamill’s casting brings a notable connection to superhero animation. The actor is widely recognized for his portrayal of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and numerous DC projects.
His experience voicing one of animation’s most recognizable villains now brings him to the opposite side of the superhero equation.
Meanwhile, Rogen will take on the role of Launchpad, the lovable pilot and sidekick who has been a fixture of both Darkwing Duck and DuckTales.
The cast also brings together familiar faces from Marvel, DC, horror and comedy, including Newton, Stevens and Briones.
Seth Rogen Produces With the Original Creator Involved
The new Darkwing Duck series comes from Sean Tretta, whose credits include Star Trek: Picard, and Borja Peña Gorostegui, known for Lost & Crowned.
Both will serve as executive producers.
Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham are producing through Point Grey Pictures.
The production team celebrated the announcement with a playful statement embracing the franchise’s famous catchphrase.
“Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous,’ and we said ‘hell yeah,’” the Point Grey team shared.
Importantly, original series creator Tad Stones also consulted on the development of Darkwing’s new adventures.
“Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said.
Stones explained that the creative team has expanded the action and comedy without abandoning the emotional qualities associated with Disney storytelling.
He also compared Darkwing’s ability to evolve across different interpretations to literary heroes such as Robin Hood, Zorro and Sherlock Holmes.
The approach suggests that the new series will explore unfamiliar territory while preserving the recognizable personality and mythology of its central character.
The Legacy of the Original Darkwing Duck
Darkwing Duck first premiered in 1991 and became a major part of Disney’s animated television lineup.
Created by Tad Stones, the original series followed Drake Mallard, an ordinary suburban father who transformed into a masked vigilante to protect the city of St. Canard.
Armed with gadgets, a gas gun, and a flair for dramatic entrances, Darkwing battled colorful supervillains while trying to balance his superhero career with raising his adopted daughter, Gosalyn.
His loyal pilot Launchpad McQuack frequently joined him on missions, providing both assistance and plenty of comic relief.
The original animated series ran from 1991 to 1992 and produced 91 episodes. Its combination of superhero parody, action, comedy, and family storytelling helped establish the character as a recognizable part of Disney’s television history.
Unlike traditional superheroes who often operate from a place of duty and selflessness, Darkwing’s enormous ego frequently complicated his missions. His desire for recognition was a defining characteristic that made him both entertaining and unpredictable.
The character later returned through the 2017 DuckTales reboot, which introduced a new interpretation of Drake Mallard and revisited several familiar characters from the original franchise.
Now, Disney is giving Darkwing another opportunity to headline his own animated series.
With a fresh premise, a new voice cast, and the involvement of the franchise’s original creator, the revival will bring the crime fighter’s adventures to a new generation while reconnecting longtime fans with the characters they remember.
A premiere date has not been announced.
