David Corenswet Becomes NFL Underdog in Mr. Irrelevant

The Superman actor stars alongside Isabel May and Michael Shannon in the inspiring true story of NFL underdog John Tuggle.

Each year, the NFL gives the final player selected in its annual draft the unofficial title of “Mr. Irrelevant.” In 1983, that distinction belonged to Tuggle, who refused to let his draft position define his career or his impact on those around him.

Corenswet plays Tuggle, the final player selected in the final round of the 1983 NFL Draft. The New York Giants gave the young running back his opportunity during Bill Parcells’ first year as the team’s head coach.

Michael Shannon plays Parcells, bringing his commanding screen presence to one of NFL history’s most recognizable coaches. Isabel May co-stars as Tuggle’s newfound love and an important part of his journey away from the field.

Mr. Irrelevant arrives exclusively in theaters on Dec. 25, 2026.

David Corenswet Leads John Tuggle’s True Story

Mr. Irrelevant will follow Tuggle as he enters the NFL with almost no expectations placed on him. As the final draft pick, he begins his professional career as a true underdog fighting for a place on the Giants’ roster.

Tuggle soon proves that his value cannot be measured by where his name appeared in the draft. His perseverance and performance earn the attention of Parcells, his teammates, and the people closest to him.

The movie will also explore the challenges Tuggle faced away from football. Paramount Pictures describes the story as one of remarkable hope and perseverance in the face of overwhelming circumstances.

“He will change the way you see the world” serves as the film’s central tagline, suggesting that the story will reach far beyond a traditional football narrative.

Corenswet feels like an ideal choice for a movie built around sincerity, determination, and quiet strength. His casting also gives him another major heroic role, although John Tuggle’s courage comes from a real person who faced challenges without superpowers.

The actor’s recent rise makes Mr. Irrelevant one of his most notable leading roles outside the DC Universe. The movie will give audiences a chance to see a more grounded side of Corenswet as he portrays an athlete fighting to prove that he belongs.

Michael Shannon Plays Giants Coach Bill Parcells

Michael Shannon will bring Bill Parcells to the screen during a defining transition for both the coach and the New York Giants.

Parcells became the Giants’ head coach in 1983, the same year the team selected Tuggle. Mr. Irrelevant will examine the relationship between the unproven player and the first-year head coach who recognizes his determination.

The film unites Corenswet and Shannon after both actors appeared in different eras of Superman storytelling. Shannon previously played General Zod in Man of Steel, while Corenswet took over the role of Clark Kent and Superman for the DC Universe.

The supporting cast includes Isabel May, David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright.

Jonathan Levine directs Mr. Irrelevant from a screenplay written by Nick Santora. Levine’s previous movies include 50/50, Warm Bodies and Long Shot, projects that balanced humor, emotion and unlikely relationships. His experience with character-driven stories should fit Tuggle’s personal journey.

Mr. Irrelevant will open only in theaters on December 25, 2026.
