Denzel Washington Has Joined Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Sequel

The Gladiator sequel adds Denzel Washington in an undisclosed role.

Deadline has reported that Denzel Washington has been cast in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel. The last time these two worked together was in 2007’s American Gangster. The follow-up to 2000’s Gladiator stars Paul Mesca. He will play Lucius, the son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen, and the nephew of Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. The original film starring Russell Crowe went on to gross $460 Million.

Synopsis of 2000’s Gladiator

Commodus (Phoenix) takes power and strips rank from Maximus (Crowe), one of the favored generals of his predecessor and father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the great stoical philosopher. Maximus is then relegated to fighting to the death in the gladiator arenas.
